I've got to admit, I love Richelle Mead's writing.
But I was really hesitant about reading this book because I don't want to encourage her writing another series while she's still got two on the go. I mean, what's with that? I put 'Blood Promise' on my wishlist months ago, and ordered it last week - despite the fact that it's not released until late August, and the next Georgina Kincaid book is not out until next year...what's a girl meant to do?
Read the first book in her new series I suppose.
I loved the beginning - not because we were introduced to a brand new kick ass heroine, but because she was facing off against a haunted shoe.Unfortunately I didn't love much about this book after that.
Don't get me wrong, Ms Mead has created another likeable and realistic protagonist in Eugenie Markham, and I love the family dynamic going on in this book; but come on - a prophecy that all the denziens of the otherworld have interpreted as 'we have to jump her bones'? A love interest that enters her life around the same time she realises there's something odd going on? The saving of a young, innocent teen from the hands of the big bad fairy?
As a fan of the genre, it all seems to be setting up for something mundane, predictable, and dare I say it, Meredith Gentry-ish (and I gave up on waiting for something to actually happen about three chapters in to the third Merry Gentry book).
But thankfully, Richelle Mead hasn't been taken over by the same muse that grabbed Laurell K Hamilton. For a start, she seems to know where her stories are headed, and once I got into reading this one, like all her others, I couldn't put it down.
While the plot, and some of the characterisations, seem thin, the tale really kicks in about halfway through the book. Things happen, things that you can't predict, and although I thought this book was kind of boring in its plot, it was exciting and set the series up in a way that I can't wait to see what happens next.

I got this book purely by chance, and I was pleasantly surprised to find I really enjoyed it, I do enjoy Meads books. This book and no doubt the series is going to be well worth it and I can't wait for the next book in the series, it has humour, passion and some parts make you want to tear your hair out but if it keeps me coming back it is well worth it.

This is a great start to a promising series. Richelle Mead is a fantastic writer and though the second in this series is so far my favourite, the first is definately worth the read. Don't let the fact that the lead is a Shaman turn you off, great mix of romance, angst, adventure and a great love triangle is starting to blossom.

This book was not as good as the second book in the series thorn queen but i still loved it.The storyline was exciting and once i got halfwat into the book i couldnt put it down.

Richelle Mead is a gifted writer and this book is no exception. I have read her other series as they continue and thought I would give this series a go too. Well it was also very good, I wouldn't say it is up there with VA but I think I was so surprised that by that one it had me blindsided. I have ordered the next one and feel confindent to be taken to a wonderful escape and am confident in this after reading Richelle Meads previous books. Buy it I am sure you won't regret it!
