About the Author

George R.R. Martin sold his first story in 1971 and has been writing professionally since then. He spent ten years in Hollywood as a writer-producer, working on "The Twilight Zone, Beauty and the Beast, " and various feature films and television pilots that were never made. In the mid '90s he returned to prose, his first love, and began work on his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He has been in the Seven Kingdoms ever since. Whenever he's allowed to leave, he returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he lives with the lovely Parris, and two cats named Augustus and Caligula, who think they run the place.

Reviews

The third volume of the high fantasy saga that began with A Game of Thrones and continued in A Clash of Kings is one of the more rewarding examples of gigantism in contemporary fantasy. As Martin's richly imagined world slides closer to its 10-year winter, both the weather and the warfare worsen. In the north, King Joffrey of House Lannister sits uneasily on the Iron Throne. With the aid of a peasant wench, Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer, escapes from jail in Riverrun. Jaime goes to the other youthful ruler, Robb Stark, to secure the release of Joffrey's prisoners, Robb's sisters Arya and Sansa Stark. Meanwhile, in the south, Queen Daenarys tries to assert her claim to the various thrones with an army of eunuchs, but discovers that she must choose between conquering more and ruling well what she has already taken. The complexity of characters such as Daenarys, Arya and the Kingslayer will keep readers turning even the vast number of pages contained in this volume, for the author, like Tolkien or Jordan, makes us care about their fates. Those two fantasy greats are also evoked by Martin's ability to convey such sensual experiences as the heat of wildfire, the chill of ice, the smell of the sea and the sheer gargantuan indigestibility of the medieval banquet at its most excessive. Perhaps this saga doesn't go as far beyond the previous bounds of high fantasy as some claim, but for most readers it certainly goes far enough to command their attention. (Nov.) "A riveting continuation of a series whose brilliance continues to dazzle."--"Patriot News

""I always expect the best from George R. R. Martin, and he always delivers."--Robert Jordan

This story of power, politics, and people of the Seven Kingdoms is the setting for the Hugo-nominated third installment in the "Song of Fire and Ice" series. The numerous story threads are intense, compelling, and multifaceted as Martin weaves a tale full of battles, political infighting, plot twists, and complex characters. Tony Award-winning British actor Roy Dotrice provides an engaging narration. VERDICT Those unfamiliar with the series may need a character guide to keep track of all the players, but this will be welcomed by Martin's legion of fans and those enjoying the HBO production based on the series. 5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 03/03/2009

A Storm of Swords is considered the best in the series 'A Song of Ice and Fire', but don't let that put you off the other books as they're all amazingly brilliant..this one just happens to be the cherry on the sundae (so far) as far as action scenes and plot twists go. However I recommend starting from A Game of Thrones, as it's not the kind of series you can pick up halfway through.

Whoever said it's a badly written book, I'm not sure they know what they're talking about (or maybe they didn't start at the beginning). I've read many many books in the fantasy genre, and this is by far the most superbly written series I've ever come across. In fact, it is so good, that Martin has ruined me for all other writers simply because no one else can live up to his superhuman brilliance.

A Song of Ice and Fire has wonderfully deep character development, amazing description and the sheer epic scope of this world is just mind boggling. It is true that Martin chops and changes between characters, but he has approximately 8 different points of view to write each book (not even necessarily the same POV's each book either), with many more main characters who don't get a POV but are still central to the overall story line. If you give it a chance you'll get used to the chopping around, and it's the kind of book you can read many times over and over and still find something new to love each time.

In all, I could rave on about this series all day long, but the bottom line is.. read it!

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 28/08/2007

Is the third book in this series the author has written what I consider to be one of the best written fantasy books in existence. If you enjoyed the previous two books then this is a must read, it includes all the best parts of the previous two book just done better. There are more surprises, more character deaths, and the biggest and most impressive ending to any book that I have ever read. The best book that I have ever read, out of any genre.

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 14/05/2007

This book tended to jump around a bit and was a little hard to follow compared to previous books in the series. It is well worth reading however as the series is excellent and very original. A major advantage this author has over other writers of similar series is that he is not afraid to kill off major characters and is less predictable also. Recommended as part of a great series.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 07/09/2006

It is surprising how much opinions can differ, I recently finished this book after devouring the other books in the series. While there are some problems with the book, for instance, the frequent character shifts can be a little frustrating when you want to focus on one character's progression, overall the book is very good. If you want a fantasy series where the magic and fairies are thin on the ground the this is the series. and this is the best book in the series yet.

1 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 08/05/2006

A badly written book, too much unecesarry description and too much focus on detail, made me forget what was going on. I don't reccomend this book at all, probably best to avoid this horrible book. There are a few spelling mistakes in this one too. Nobody needs to put up with this.
