Susan Wise Bauer has written the Story of the World series through four volumes, this being the first. Each book is written as a novel, but filled with facts and historical figures that become lifelike through her pen. She has maps showing where each chapter in located and writes everything chronologically. That, to me, is the only downside of the books. You can be in China, then the next few chapters be in Japan, England, South America, then you're back in China again.
She also has Activity Guides to work with alongside these books, but they are best for primary aged children.
There is nothing else like them so they certainly fill a niche! This particular book is written to lower primary aged children but older ones may learn a lot too.

This is an excellent resource for teaching general history. There are plenty of facts and dates, however is written in story form to make it a more pleasant read for children. The drama of salvation history from the Bible is also incorporated into the content to give it a place for students who want to see where the Bible fits in to human history.
