Reviews

"'This important book provides a timely contribution to the ongoing debate on industrial policy in South Africa. Through 15 excellent research-based chapters, it provides a unique insight into the local dynamics of restructuring in Africa's largest industrial concentration, Ekurhuleni.' Professor Edward Webster, University of the Witwatersrand 'This book provides a wide-ranging review of industrial development dynamics through a variety of lenses, including region, sector, firm size, value chains and communities.' Stephen Hanival, Director, Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies 'The contributions to this volume reflect the vibrant debates on the challenges of globalisation and development, and undertake critical appraisals of the record of the past decade.... One of the clear messages from the contributions to the book is the importance of different development paths for the outcomes in terms of employment and income. An industrial development path which continues to exclude a large proportion of the population is clearly not sustainable... This book is an important contribution to our understanding of the nitty gritty realities of industrial transformation in a strategically important district of our country and deserves to be widely read.' From foreword by Minister Alec Erwin"
