"Taonga Tuku Iho: Illustrated Encyclopedia of Traditional Maori Life" was first published in 1963 as "An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Maori Life". This new edition with its Maori title (which translates to 'treasures from the past that have been handed down to us') has been fully revised and updated by Buddy Mikaere so that it is now a comprehensive yet easy-to-follow guide to pre-European Maori life. Drawing on the classic works of early anthropologists, ethnologists and commentators such as Elsdon Best, Sir Peter Buck and many others, this book is ideal for visitor information, as a home reference and as a basic text for students and researchers. Arranged alphabetically for easy reference, the text summarises all important elements, influences and features of pre-European Maori life, including detailed explanations and references to myths, legends and stories of the gods. The authoritative text, written by A.W. Reed and revised by Buddy Mikaere, is complemented throughout the original book's detailed line drawings. There is also a range of full-colour and black and white photographs.
