About the Author

Terry Harrison grew up in Norfolk. His early art education was basic and he never dreamed that he would become an artist. At fifteen, Terry moved to Hampshire and was inspired by a brilliant art teacher. He took O and A levels in art, then won a place at Farnham Art School at the age of sixteen. He became a graphic artist, but continued to paint in his spare time. In 1984 Terry gave up his job to paint full time. He demonstrates to artists' groups and teaches on painting holidays. He has also developed a range of his own brushes and paints. He is the author of many best selling books on painting with acrylics and watercolours. Terry now lives in the Cotswolds.

Reviews

There was a sort of inevitability about this. Given the popularity of Terry Harrison and of the Top Tips series, there can't be a publisher on earth who could resist stapling two pre-existing titles together. It does make sense though, as acrylic and watercolour sit together better than any other two media and have a considerable degree of cross-over. If you haven't already got the two donor books for this agglomeration, then it represents good value and gives you a lot of material to work with. The format remains the same and you still get the spiral binding that means the book will naturally lie flat in use. Each of the two sections contains 100 tips, so there's been a degree of editing, but you still get topics including the use of photographs, oil vs. watercolour techniques in acrylics, wet-on-wet vs. wet-on-dry, and subjects from skies and landscapes to water, boats, mountains and flowers. I've always maintained that you should buy each of the volumes in this series as they come out. If you haven't followed that advice, and you want somewhere to start, do it with this.-Artbookreview.net This book has a ring-bound spine, which makes it perfect for taking out in the field, so that you have Terry's knowledge hand in every painting situation. Terry is renowned for his clear, straightforward approach and this book includes over 200 tried and tested tips, explaining how to master all your favourite subjects from skies and mountains to trees, rivers, snow and buildings.-Leisure Painter Terry's fans will probably have both the books this is distilled from but, for newcomers, this is an excellent compilation of his best tips for two enduring popular media. If you're not familiar with the layout of the Top Tips series, it offers quick (and frequently easy) solutions to a wide variety of common painting problems. The books themselves stand or fall perhaps more than any others, on the quality of the authors, because it's essential that they're good teachers who understand not just what they're doing but what you, as a student, are trying to do as well. Terry is one of the best at this and he provides a wealth of good ideas on such things as skies and distance as well as techniques from wet-in-wet to washes to glazing he also has some neat tricks for things like giving character to windows and texture to brickwork.-Paint
