An astounding premise for a story - a time traveller who has an enduring love for his future wife - as he stumbles back and forth through a hundred years or so of his life. Henry DeTamble is a nerdy librarian with an amazing ability to find trouble. His knack comes from a chromosomal abnormality that enables him to time-travel. At times of stress, he disappears from the present to arrive in the past or the future, naked and nauseous, and often in dangerous situations. The common themes to his travel are loss (his mother), love (his wife Clare) and troubled relationships (ex-girlfriend Ingrid and alcoholic father). The characters are flawed and yet the story is believable, as Henry often gives Clare future important dates and his loved ones information about the stock market and lottery numbers, but he can not alter the future...
While it is, in essence a love story, it does not descend into the sentimental. It can be a bit difficult to keep track of the time-line and secondary characters at times, but it is well written and tightly paced so as to leave you constantly turning to the next page. I can guarantee that the last few chapters will leave you with a lump in your throat and tears welling...especially the last line of Henry's love letter to Clare. "I love you, always. Time is nothing." Read it and weep. A thoroughly beautiful book.

The Time Traveler's Wife is an ingenious story told brilliantly. I found myself unable to put it down once I started reading. I wished it never ended! It is not your conventional love story but it is one of the most romantic love stories I have read in a long time. Definitely highly recommended!

I really enjoyed reading the time travellers wife. Has to be up there with on the best!..... Clare meets henry at a very young age, and patiently waits to meet this man in her future. Very well written and kept me wanting more. Can't wait for the movie coming out in 2009, staring eric bana.

I bought this book for my wife and it really sounded like a girly read. She said she loved it so I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it!! The whole time travel thing is excellent and adds to the story rather than detracts from it as some science fiction is want to do. There is a very good reason that this book is on the best-seller list, and those who we have recommended it to have enjoyed it also. Henry and Claire are truly likable characters written with a depth and warmth that makes it very sad to leave them behind when the last page has been read. This is a book that has stuck with me for some time, a memorable read.

5 Stars for this wonderfully constructed novel.
This is a beautifully unusual love story that flips back and forth through time. Happy and sad, I wept a few tears during this one.
If you want to read a story about a love that breaks the boundaries of time, this one is for you.
Some science fiction fans may also enjoy this one, though it is not a science fiction in the traditional sense.

When I first bought this book, I didn't think that it would be so extraodinary, so brillant. You'd find that the first quarter of the book is difficult to keep up with as you have no idea what is going on. The book is definitely hard to keep up with but once you've set your mind on it, you just go with the flow. I found this novel very emotionally touching and provoking. This has to be one of my most favourite books.

There is something very special about this book. Not only is it well-written (I find these days it's very hard to find a writer who knows how to actually write), the storyline is intriguing, the plot is exciting, the relationships are truly magical and beautiful, and the character development is satisfyingly real.
There's an honesty about this story that goes against the subject matter: a man travelling back and forth, here and there, throughout time while his wife remains in the present, a constant. It seems like it could be far-fetched, unbelievable, a bit fantastical and sci-fi-ish, but it's enjoyable how genuine it all turns out to be.
The author writes each chapter from the point of view of the two main characters, and somehow manages to find the perfect voice for the man and the perfect feminine voice as well. Very rarely will a woman get a male character so believable. Both characters are full, whole people that you become attached to and in love with.
This is an emotional book, that will leave you with more than a few tears in your eyes, but it also has a great intelligence and historical, cultural accuracy. The reader is able to follow Henry and Clare through their lives, and corresponding social and cultural activities. It is historically brilliant, with details you'd never imagine coming into the storyline. For myself, it was surprising to read about Violent Femmes concerts, punk rock, grunge, family troubles, spiritual and philosophical debate and thought, theories, the joy of museums, the need for criminal activity and even violence, the invention of certain antipsychotic medications - it's weird, I know, but these are parts that I could really identify with.
I would have to say this is one of my all-time favourite books now.

A thought provoking love story, well written. Enjoyable if you are a reader who is able to suspend belief.
