Filling each spread, Dyer's (illustrator of the Piggins books and of Baby Bear's Bedtime Book ) commanding yet gentle, large-scale watercolors are the key to the appeal of this bedtime lullaby. Fox ( Possum Magic ; Guess What? ) offers sweet but slim verse that bids good night to a selection of animals being cuddled and coddled by their mothers, all endearingly rendered at eye-level. The rhymed couplets have a pleasantly lilting rhythm, if an occasionally trite rhyme scheme: ``It's time for bed, little sheep, little sheep, / The whole wide world is going to sleep.'' After viewing the various animals nodding off, youngsters will take their bedtime cue from a cherubic toddler, whose blond head falls into a pillow covered with golden stars as mother offers a hug and the text concludes: ``The stars on high are shining bright-- / Sweet dreams, my darling, sleep well . . . / good night!'' Ages 2-6. (Sept.)
PreS-Gr 2-Charming illustrations and comfortable rhymes characterize this appealing bedtime book. A twilight mood is set by dusky endpapers sprinkled with twinkling yellow stars, and by a title page showing a mother reading to a child. Double-page spreads feature animal pairs, each with a parent settling its offspring down for the night. An orange tabby kitten receives a soothing bath, a sleepy blue bird is tucked into a warm nest, and a delicate fawn curls up against its mother. Each babe is lulled by a gently rhyming couplet beginning with the phrase, ``It's time for bed.'' Dyer's watercolor illustrations are dear. Large, clearly drawn animals are placed against backgrounds of vivid hues. A variety of landscapes keeps each scene looking fresh as a foal settles down in a moonlit meadow, a pair of fish blow bubbles in blue water, and two snakes curl up in overgrown grass. Working beautifully with the soothingly repetitive text, each painting conveys a warm feeling of safety and affection. A wonderful bedfellow for Ginsburg's Asleep, Asleep (Greenwillow, 1992).-Joy Fleishhacker, New York Public Library

One of my absolute favourites, and - as you can guess - a great bedtime book. It has repetitive, predictable text, it rhymes and the pictures (of animals) are beautiful! What more could you want from a children's book! We read this to our first child the night she was born and I have read it to children up to eight years of age and they have all enjoyed it. If you like good quality children's books, you'll love this one!
I love reading this book to my 3 year old daughter. It is the last book i read to her each night, and a lovely one to wind down for sleep. she snuggles in to me and points to the animals on each page. Mem Fox is a wonderful author.
This is a beautiful little book and well illustrated. Would be a great book to read before bed with soft sounding words and gentle pictures. If only I could get my daughter to wait until bed time!
My children have all loved this as a bedtime book. The repetitive text has a lovely rhythm to it that they enjoy. The illustrations of baby animals with their mothers are beautiful. As the kids got older they loved to join in with the story, filling in the name of the animal. Lovely to read and look at. Highly recommended.
A beautifully written and illustrated book. My 22 month old daughter has enjoyed this story as a night time read for over a year, and gets excited at the different animals in the story. The repetitive "It's time to sleep..." on each page is a nice, relaxing way to send your little one off to bed. The book, although simply written, is also a perfect read for older children, and would be sure to be a favourite.
The only problem with having this book as a bedtime story is that the kids will be up all night wanting more more more from this fantastic book. it's adorably cute and kids will cherish is long after they stop having bedtime stories The Lambs on the cover is what drew me into this book as it shows the gently nature of a child in their innocent dreams....
My 3 year old loves this bedtime story, and the illustrations of different animals cuddling and caring for their young are gorgeous. The rhythm of the story is lovely and soothing and has become a favourite in our house. It is just long enough to settle your child and encourage rest time. Basically, I have found that you can't go wrong with a Mem Fox book!
This book is a lovely bedtime read and particularly good for little ones who find it hard to get to sleep. This promotes sleep and is very calming and soothing, perfect to wind down your child at the end of a busy day. Beautiful illustrations and a simple, easy to follow story line. Sure to make bedtime popular! A reasonable price as well
