'Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird.' A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the thirties. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much...

Harper Lee's coming-of-age classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, tells the story of six-year-old Scout Finch, her older brother Jem, and their father, Atticus, a small-town Alabama lawyer assigned to defend Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of rape. The reaction of the town, the dignity of Robinson, and the character of their father affect both children as they navigate the path from childhood innocence to adult understanding. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck is a classic itself, winning three Academy Awards. Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
Lee's beloved American classics makes its belated debut on audio (after briefly being available in the 1990s for the blind and libraries through Books on Tape) with the kind of classy packaging that may spoil listeners for all other audiobooks. The two CD slipcases housing the 11 discs not only feature art mirroring Mary Schuck's cover design but also offers helpful track listings for each disk. Many viewers of the 1962 movie adaptation believe that Lee was the film's narrator, but it was actually an unbilled Kim Stanley who read a mere six passages and left an indelible impression. Competing with Stanley's memory, Spacek forges her own path to a victorious reading. Spacek reads with a slight Southern lilt and quiet authority. Told entirely from the perspective of young Scout Finch, there's no need for Spacek to create individual voices for various characters but she still invests them all with emotion. Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1960 novel, which quietly stands as one of the most powerful statements of the Civil Rights movement, has been superbly brought to audio. Available as a Perennial paperback. (Aug.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

If you have not read this book than you are missing out! Where have you been! This is my favourite book of its genre, and it is one that I will read and re read for the rest of my life. It is indearing and moving, and shows what a little compassion can do in the eyes and lives of others. It gives interesting perspectives on raising two children, and teaches them to be accpeting and to not ever prejudge another person. They may make their own opinions, but only after spending time with that person. It is a great book, which I truely loved reading. Do yourself a favour by buying and reading this book, it really will make you think.
Beautifully written. A book that all readers must have on the bookshelf. The further in you get, the more enthralled in the characters you become. 'Scout' sees the world with such innocent eyes that it's hard to believe that there could be so much hate and discrimination in the world. Loved it!
Indeed To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic, a book to be read by everyone. Aside from the predjuces and wrongful justice, Harper Lee has given an insite to the differences between people not by colour but through a chlds curiosity, regarding the 'mad man' who never goes outside. Making contact with him being unafraid of him, prooved to be the person whose actions were to defend Scout and her brother during a another crisis. A story that reinforces the point that human strenghts and failings prevail no matter which family we are born into.
Everyone should read this book, it is written with touching warmth from the heart of a child, perhaps the only perspective from which the horrors of society can be seen untainted.
In a gentle way Harper Lee pushes you and pulls you until you face the ending with nothing to veil it.
A classic to be read and treasured, and then read again.
This novel deserves its reputation as a classic. Seeing the world of the old south US throught the eyes of a child brilliantly shows up its unwritten rules, racism and hypocrisies. Scout is a likeable protagonist and we join her in learning about justice, tolerance, racism and, above all, the importance of always standing up for what is right, even when you're in a losing battle! If you didn't read this in school - pick up a copy. If you did - read it again!
This story has been killed by the school system making it part of the studies, yet this is a must read for all. Dealing with relevant issues of today, though written years before my time. I recommend this be given to your children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren etc. before the school systems have a chance to rip it apart.
i just loved this book, i hate reading but i made an effort with book and i am so glad i did, i loved it so much i got the movie out! but this is a fantastic book, its really sad but also really moving, i think everyone must have read this book atleast once in their life, if not you must!
Harper Lee's 'To Kill A Mockingbird' is considered a classic, and not without justification. Though I wouldn't personally call it one of my favourite books, to think of what the society this book was originally released into was like, and what effect this book had, that in itself is reason to read it. However, when I read it, I did so for school. Among all the other students' groans, I found a rather enjoyable book.
Though it took awhile to get into, the story DOES make you want to keep reading, not in any suspenceful kind of way, but just because the book feels so... friendly. Looking through the eyes of young Scout, everything has a nice feel about it. However, I can't say the story is what did this for me. It was Atticus. His character is just so great and he is a real source of inspiration to me. For it's place in history, it's morals and it's decent story and godly Atticus, I recommend this book to everyone.
