I am interested in this book, because when I was a student at Goldsmiths' Teacher Training College in New Cross, some of my class mates did they practice teaching in a school that fits the description of this school. Thus I am aware of the background to the book and know it is genuine. I have seen elsewhere that former students of the school dispute the stories, but whether they are 100% true or not they are true to life,
The story of a black teacher who is sent to work in a poor and downtrodden part of London. He then has racism to deal with, as well as all the problems of the students, both socioeconomic and otherwise. He tells how he tries to overcome this and get on with the job of teaching and getting them to learn.
