Even though swimming is the closest thing to a perfect exercise you can name, too few people experience its full benefits. That's because most find themselves fighting to stay afloat, struggling for air, and feeling exhausted after just a lap or two, all of which makes this perfect exercise frustrating, laborious, and complicated. For the past fifteen years, veteran swim coach Terry Laughlin has been teaching adults how to swim better - and enjoy it more - by using his simple and original techniques. Laughlin turns traditional swimming beliefs inside out as he explains that it's technique - not athletic ability - that makes a strong swimmer. Laughlin teaches 'Fishlike Swimming,' focusing on slipping through the water rather than using muscle to overpower it. The key is working with the water, not against it - learning to swim ever faster and farther without losing a sense of flow, grace, economy, and balance.

David Marsh 1996, 2000, and 2004 United States Olympic Coach and Head Coach, Auburn University (2003 NCAA Men's and Women's champions) "Total Immersion" can help anyone learn to be a better swimmer, regardless of ability. Terry Laughlin makes an improved stroke simple for the novice, yet I've seen his methods work for elite swimmers, too.

A great book not only for those starting out with stroke correction, but for seasoned swimmers wanting to hone those techniques already learned. One of the best technique books I've read - gets down to the basics of a body moving through water with least resistance. Laughlin is right - swimming is all about technique and he has lots to say about it.
I was a good swimmer before I read this book. I was doing roughly 50 strokes a lap. After doing his drills for 6 months, I got it down to 35 (occassionaly less!) Years later, after having babies and destroying my abdominal muscles, my stroke rates are still about the same although my speed is still on the comeback. And I'm only 5'2" with not so long arms.
One could get easily hooked on this, simplifies everything, does get results if one uses it as it says, and you will notice the results instantly. A great tool for assessing swimmers, gets the basics back to simplicity and results will speak for themselves. Great details, simple and easy to understand.
Finally a book that looks at common sense and plain language to swimming. Has simple and effective drills to improve your strokes, more effective streamlining, better balance in the water, and a better simple training plan for all ages and types of swimmers. Clear and detailed line drawings, very effective and easy to understand. This book is made for both coach and swimmers of all type, highly recommend to all if you want to know how to be more effective in swimming, get more efficient, and swim faster but smarter.
