We live in an oil-dependent world, and have got to this level of dependency in a very short space of time, using vast reserves of oil in the process without planning for when the supply is not so plentiful. Most people don't want to think about what happens when the oil runs out (or becomes prohibitively expensive), but "The Transition Handbook" shows how the inevitable and profound changes ahead can have a positive effect. They can lead to the rebirth of local communities, which will generate their own fuel, food and housing. They can encourage the development of local currencies, to keep money in the local area. They can unleash a local 'skilling-up', so that people have more control over their lives. "The Transition Handbook" is the manual which will guide communities to begin this 'energy descent' journey. The argument that 'small is inevitable' is upbeat and positive, as well as utterly convincing. Read this book!

About the Author
Rob Hopkins has long been aware of the implications of our oil-dependent status, and has been energetically campaigning to increase awareness of its impact. Having successfully created an Energy Descent Plan for Kinsale in Ireland which was later adopted as policy by the town council, Rob moved to Totnes in Devon and initiatied Transition Town Totnes, the first UK town to address the issues of life after peak oil.

Excellent book, beautifully laid-out, really easy to read. An excellent introduction to the problems of peak oil, climate change and the dependence of our society on oil.
And most importantly of all an inspiring, practical guide to how we can respond to these challenges in an empowering way by reinvigorating our communities and working together to create more resilient, sustainable, localised, healthy neighbourhoods and towns.
An encouraging, inspiring, invigorating book everyone interested in the future of their community should read!!!
This book is a must read for anyone, anywhere! It is well set out, optimistic yet realistic and easy to follow. The information in it is timely and gives you hope that with a little bit of community involvement, we can not only live in a post oil world but live well.
The author, Rob Hopkins, speaks from his own personal experiences, as he has helped transform his own oil dependent town into a "Transition Town." These Transition Towns are now popping up around the globe as more and more people are becoming increasingly aware of the problems we will face in the not to distant future.
I can't describe just how glad I am to have bought it. It truly is remarkable and invaluable. I have since ordered 5 more copies to give to council, friends and family. I urge you to read it and do the same.
