In the First Part of The Lord of the Rings, 111-year-old Bilbo Baggins (hero of The Hobbit) passed along his magical ring to his orphaned nephew, Frodo--unwittingly setting its original owner, the horrible Gollum, on his trail. Lest the ring fall into evil hands, Frodo sought to destroy it at the Mountain of Fire in the enemy land of Mordor. He convened the Companions of the Ring to carry out this perilous mission, but his brave band has been scattered, beset by orc-soldiers, and in the Second Part, as 'the great Darkness' descends, Frodo himself has mysteriously disappeared.

The second book of the series the hobbits Pippen and Merry have been captured, Sam and frodo gone on alone Boromier dead Gandulf in the abess in Moria and legolas, gimly and Aragon must try and get the younger hobbits back before its too late!
The Lord of the Rings is the epic adventure / fantasy of our time. It is commonly regarded as one of the best books ever written- and reading it does not disappoint. The battles are beautifully staged and absolutely realistic (Tolkien wrote some of the battle scenes while serving in the wars) and the characters are wonderfully sculpted. The 3-part series introduces a full range of emotions from dread and fear to exhilaration and love. A perfect story!
