There was a time when the world was sweeter...when the women in Beaufort, North Carolina, wore dresses, and the men donned hats... Every April, when the wind smells of both the sea and lilacs, Landon Carter remembers 1958, his last year at Beaufort High. Landon had dated a girl or two, and even once sworn that he'd been in love. Certainly the last person he thought he'd fall for was Jamie, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town's Baptist minister...Jamie, who was destined to show him the depths of the human heart -- and the joy and pain of living.
From the internationally bestselling author Nicholas Sparks comes his most moving story yet...

Sure to wring yet more tears from willing readers' eyes, the latest novel by the bestselling Sparks is a forced coming-of-age story concerning a pair of unlikely young lovers. In a corny flashback device that mimics The Notebook, 57-year-old Landon Carter spirits himself back to his fateful senior year in high school in Beaufort, N.C., when he was an archetypal troublemaking teenager of the 1950s, changed forever by an unexpected first love. Jamie Sullivan, the Bible-toting minister's daughter, with her drab brown sweaters, spinster hairstyle and sincere, beatific advice, is the obvious target of high school ridicule. Despite conspiring in Jamie's derision, class president Landon, desperate for a date for the homecoming dance, finds himself asking Jamie. Afterwards, Jamie asks him to participate with her in the metaphor-laden school Christmas play (Jamie plays the angel). Landon endures the taunting of his friends and forms an uneasy friendship with Jamie, which is carefully supervised by her father. The teens visit needy orphans, give Oscar-worthy performances in the school play and share dreams watching the sunset. Landon realizes he's in love with Jamie, but, of course, she is hiding a devastating secret that could wring her from Landon's arms forever. Now tortured by his knowledge of what will be her terrible fate, he must make the ultimate decision that catapults him into adulthood. Readers may be frustrated with the invariable formula that Sparks seems to regurgitate with regularity. Although the narrator declares, "My story can't be summed up in two or three sentences; it can't be packaged into something neat and simple that people would immediately understand," this is the author's most simple, formulaic, and blatantly melodramatic package to date. In Sparks's latest sentimental tale, a 17-year-old boy in 1950s North Carolina finds all his expectations overthrown by the Baptist minister's daughter. Film rights were purchased by the producer of Message in a Bottle. Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

I love anything nicholas sparks so really enjoyed a walk to remember. i stayed up all night cos i couldnt put it down and it had me crying 3/4's through. a really good read, probably a bit more suited to teenage women.
I'm a big nicholas sparks fan so ofcourse loved the book 'a walk to remember' although it made me cry!
was dissapointed though that i recieved the book with the movie cover on it instead of the orignal seeing as i was after the specific one and just assumed the one picutred was the one i was buying... ohwell.. still a great book.
Melinda,IS God just not THE best? I just finished yetserday on the beach, The Last Lecture , and the one thing that hit my heart is that it never hurts to ask. NEVER EVER.And because YOU asked your two brothers, you are NOW enjoying the precious answer to the very question you asked. How awesome is that?Love ya, and enjoy this time, very precious!
This is an amazing book! I could not put it down and I cried throughout. Nicholas Sparks is an amazing author. Very well written, Sparks has a remarkable way with words which helped me make a connection with the characters.
A walk to remember is yet another classic love story from author Nicholas Sparks. A beautiful tale of love and strength in the olden days, but also adapts to modern day times. Similar to the notebook in that it’s set in the past and that’s its based on two people from different worlds who’s worlds collide unexpectedly. Agreat moving book which also has a great movie based on it.
I have seen both the movie and read the book. I have to say, i liked the book better even though they were both similar. The book went more in depth with the characters and the 'walk' to remember is portrayed differently. I read the book in the plane and cried the whole way down the descent, it's a sad book but it is essentially beautiful. It makes you appreciate the smaller things in life.
I have read the story and watched the film. In my opinion the film was much better. This story is a sad one and I cried a lot, however; even though it was set in the 1950s, it seemed too innocent. Some things just don't seem realistic to me. But maybe its just because i was born in the 90s, and the film version is a more current version, wher the guys are a lot badder. The story itself is simply written. a boy from the rich but somewhat despised family falls in love with the daughter of the minister. Tragedy occurs and he learns a lesson about others and the girl changes his life forever.
what a sad tale! i cant get thru this without balling my eyes out. this book was kinda in the style of books like lurlene mcdaniel, ie a very very sad tale and you are attached to th characters and everything! tells the tale of a gurl with leukemia, and it is such a sad tale at that. you have been warned!!
The book goes into more depth of the characters, a little predictable on the outcome of Jamie. However in saying that it was very sad and i couldnt put the book down. The growth on Landons character was nice great to see a turnaround. I would say watch the movie as well you do pick up seperate things that arnt in the book.
I watched the movie as well as the read the book. I cannot decide which one is better. Even though the plot is very similar, there are still some very different things that happen in the book that you don't see in the movie. You read more character and depth into the characters in the book. I would definitely recommend that you read the book if you have seen the movie. When you read the end, you can understand why the book ended up being a walk to remember which you don't actually see in the movie. A great read, and I cried from the second half to the end:)
