This hardcover features the first 12 issues of the hit series along with the covers for the issues in one oversized hardcover volume. Perfect for long time fans, new readers and anyone needing a slightly heavy object with which to fend off the walking dead.
Inspired by Kirkman's award-winning comic, this novel follows the events that transform family man Phillip into a half-crazed dictator known as the Governor in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. Fred Berman's narration is smooth and keeps listeners engaged throughout this audio version. He develops solid, authentic-sounding voices for most of the book's characters, particularly the authoritative Phillip, and Brian, whose voice is soft with a hint of weakness. And while some secondary character sound like caricatures, Berman more than redeems himself via his excellent pacing. As the narrative moves into more pitched moments, Berman chooses pauses and projection with a great deliberateness, adding to the suspense and making the prose all the more impactful. If you haven't gotten into the walking dead series yet then this book is the perfect introduction for you. While it may seem a little pricey I can assure you that it is well worth it. The quality of this volume, and the story it contains is really great. And, even better, you don't have to order it from America :)
'The walking dead' details the adentures of a group of survivors after most of the population succumbs to a zombie apocalypse. Particular attention is paid to a police officer named Rick Grimes. Grimes was the victim of a shooting on the first page of the comic, and when he wakes up in hospital the world has changed. While the premise has been done before, and the 'rules' behind the setting are not new Kirkman takes these genre staples and turns them into something really great. Rick's development as a character and the adventures he and his survivor companions get into kept me glued to the pages right till the last, excellent, frame.
While there are some duller points in the book, especially in the last quarter, overall it is an excellent work, and deserving of your time.
Awesome survival horror series. Decent balance of character study and action. Not afraid to kill off characters. Different enough from the TV show that you can enjoy both versions separately. Just don't get attached to the art style in chapter one, as a new artist takes over with a noticeably less polished style. There are a few jarring proportion quirks in the art of chapter two and some weird typeface inconsistencies, but overall an awesome effort.
Easily one of the best graphic novels I have ever read. Detailed charecter development and gory zombie scenes come together to create an eerie end of the world tale about a handfull of survivors and their seemingly hopeless struggle for survival. Excellent black and white art work add to the feel of the book and the writing is second to none.
