DICK COUCH graduated at the top of BUD/S Class 45 in 1969. He commanded a SEAL platoon in Vietnam and led one of the only successful POW rescue operations of that conflict. He is the author of 4 novels.

I have read allot of books in this genre but none would compare to this for insight and engrossment. This is by far one of the best books I have read. This is part autobiography part documentary. The author parallels his own experiences having gone through BUDS and SEAL training some years before against the new breed of warrior. The author follows a group of SEALS from start to finish (the book is completed pre 9/11 and has a post script talking about the changes the men you follow throughout the book now face post 9/11) on their journey to become elite special forces soldiers. The author has unprecedented access which helps remove the cloud of mystery surrounding the training. The best part of this book is the development of the real people who start as numbers and become people you want to succeed as you begin rooting for them as you turn the pages. If your interested in the military, human endurance or just want an engrossing read this is a book you wont be able to put down!!!
