"Watchers in the Night" is the tale of Carolyn Mathers, a former homicide detective-turned-private investigator. For the past few months, she's been suffering from a bad case of paranoia every time she goes out at night - she feels like she's being watched. Finally, when she gets up the nerve to go out on her first date since her fiance Gray left her at the altar, she gets attacked by a mugger - and her exfiance steps out of the shadows to help her fight the mugger off. Afterwards, Gray melts back into the shadows, but Carolyn isn't letting him go again. She puts her skills to use, and investigates - and discovers a world she never imagined. A world of vampires and vampire hunters, of murderers and guardians, of living at night and sleeping during the day. The world Gray now inhabits. But when Carolyn said she wasn't letting Gray go again, she meant it - and now she'll do anything to keep him in her life...but will she take the final step and join him in immortality?

Susan Sizemore, don’t eat your heart out, although Jenna Black’s new vamp series shows promise. Sizemore created a believable vampire reality running in tandem with humans, in her Prime / Tribe series, and Black has also shaped a credible background, with Killers [the vamps who vant to do more than suck your blood; I guess the name is self-explanatory], and Guardians [again, self-explanatory]. Gray is stuck between both worlds. He has killed once, in desperation, and the Guardians are wary of him. For the past three years Gray has been keeping an eye on his once fiancée, Carolyn, whom he left almost at the altar when he was turned. Caro, ex-cop and now PI, believed Gray must have been murdered until voila, he turns up to save her life. Gray is suspected by the Guardians of being a serial killer, Carolyn puts her investigative talents to work with the help of her [I truly believe Black didn’t mean to make Hannah psychotic, but you sure wouldn’t want to annoy her] best friend, Gray gets kidnapped, Carolyn gets kidnapped to be Gray’s dinner, which will really turn him into a Killer, and lots of exciting things happen. In between excitements the book moves a little slowly, even ploddingly in places, but still, a good start to a potentially great series. Almost a four star.
