About the Author
Mandy Stanley was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk. She has a BA from Nottingham University which led her initially into a career in fashion. A subsequent interest in the drawing and illustrative areas of her occupation, coupled with an earlier course at Great Yarmouth College of art and design, initiated a move into freelance illustrative work.
Animal sounds abound in What Do You Say? by Mandy Stanley. Saturated colors in simple blocky forms represent different animals. On one spread, cat and mouse appear together, lending the answer to the titular question-a giant "meoow" and tiny, trembling "eek eek"-a whole other meaning. Praise for 'Lettice - The Dancing Rabbit': "This engaging debut...shows a considerable flair for observation and characterisation. There is a great feeling of vibrancy and joy in this little story." Books for Keeps "A delight for girls aged three to six." Evening Express Praise for 'Lettice - A Christmas Wish': "A pink, sparkly must-have for all girly-girls!" Mother & Baby
PreS-Stanley poses the title question in relation to 12 familiar animals and replies with the sounds they make. "What do you say to a pig? oink oink/What do you say to a lion? rrrrrooooar-." The final colorful underwater spread reads: "And what do you say to a little fish?" The turn of the page reveals the answer: "Hello little fish!" Set against contrasting pastel backgrounds, the creatures are centered on each page with their sounds written in playful fonts underneath. A solid, but not particularly inspired concept book for lapsits and toddler storytimes.-Olga R. Kuharets, Broward County Libraries, Fort Lauderdale, FL Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
