Why are girls as young as five years old concerned about their looks and addicted to shopping? Why are young teenage girls having sex and binge-drinking, responding to chat-room predators, and bullying their peers via email and text messages? Why are depression, cutting and eating disorders on the rise, and why, with so much choice when it comes to careers, do so many just want to marry young and have babies? Over two years Maggie Hamilton interviewed girls, teachers, school counsellors, psychologists, and law enforcement and medical personnel to get an insider's view on what girls are experiencing at present, from birth to the teenage years. Informed, revealing, compassionate and at times shocking, What's Happening to Our Girls? is a book for parents and all those who want to better understand and support girls.

A very interesting read with lots of facts and figures to help if you're raising girls. Scary facts, which can be depressing. It's not ficiton, so if you enjoy reading the startling facts, it's great.
Every parent must read this book. It is especially important for new mums and dads, so as to prevent irreversible damage that occurs during the early childhood years. This book gives a clear picture of the current and rapidly worsening state of childhood for girls. Many of the issues presented are relevant for boys also. It is essential to firstly understand the problem in order to be motivated to find a solution- something which this book does well. However the remedies offered by the author, whilst largely 'spot on', are perhaps too generalised and require expansion and clarification for maximum effect. In addition, I question the author's call for more sex education in schools at a younger age and discussion with children about innapropriate images and scenarios that they are exposed to in the media. I feel parents and educators must first and foremost protect the innocence of childhood. It is essential we etablish networks of support with adults who are aware of the dangers of the commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood and are willing to work against it.
I implore every parent, carer, grandma, aunty, teacher and politician to read this book and take action immediately. Please save our girls!
