This picture book’s purpose is to engage very small children and I can imagine much interaction between reader and child happening with this book. The peskily elusive green sheep is nowhere to be found (except on the last page), but we meet all kinds of other sheep: blue sheep, bed sheep, bath sheep, near sheep, far sheep and more throughout the book’s pages. We also learn about size, colour, distance and some vocabulary while we’re there. The language is simple with a basic rhythm that will be easy for children to pick up and repeat. For me Horacek’s illustrations lack a little interest, probably because they’re missing the clever observations that usually go with her cartoons. Overall, the idea of bringing Mem Fox and Judy Horacek together is an interesting one, although not entirely satisfying to my adult eye. The littlies, however, will enjoy playing along with this one. My son loves this book. To the reviewer that said that this book is not worth getting, I would think that other children would miss out on the fun looking for green sheep ... Which may be more interesting than a green parrot?
Anyway, my 18month old has been asking for this book, sometimes reading it over and over again. Colour wise I think the publisher has to work harder at getting colour accuracy Red sheep looks more like orange... So don't hope at using is book as a colours book. Use it more for the funny antics that the different colour sheeps do.
Would recommend to buy even as a 2nd hand book if a new one costs too much. I got mine as a used book. Now it is really a well used one :) loved none the less.
This is another simple little book that my daughter loved, quite possibly because so many of the pictures are ones that she can recognise herself and after just a couple of readings she can say what each picture is without prompting. And that is the kind of thing that makes a young hild very keen on a particular book. The picturea re easy to follw and colourful too. Recommended.
This is my daughter's favourite book and we read it every night. Actually, she now reads it to me (she is 2 and a half). By following the illustrations and the simple phrases, she has learnt the whole story and it has helped her with opposites, eg. near and far.
This book is completely overrated. It's a direct copy of similar children's picture books over the years, most notably 'Where is the Green Parrot?' Couldn't the author have even changed the colour? Anyway, there are many better childrens' picture books to choose from rather than rewarding this author's plagerism. There are so many children's books, even a different one by the same author would be a better one.
