At six o'clock every day, without fall, with no excuses, Sam Vlmes must go home to read Where's My Cow?, with all the right farmyard noises, to his little boy. There are some things you have to do.It is the most loved and chewed book in the world. But his father wonders why it is full of moo-cows and baa-lambs when Young Sam will only ever see them cooked on a plate. He can think of a more useful book for a boy who lives in a city. So Sam Vimes starts adapting the story. A story with streets, not fields. A book with rogues and villains. A book about the place where he'll grow up.

What can I say? Anything by Terry Pratchett is pure gold. Don't bother with the likes of J.K. Rowling. The best modern day fantasy creator is Pratchett. Even my second daughters middle name is Pratchett.
Where's My Cow? is a great way to get the little ones ready for Pratchett's British humour. This is a children's book that even adults and Discworld fans can enjoy.
No Discworld collection is complete without this book! Yes, we have already read the entire story in Thud, but that is not the point! The gorgeous illustrations bring Vimes to life and will bring a smile to the face of any true Discworld fan!
I actually had my copy of this signed by Terry Pratchett himself, and I am so glad that he did. Turning the traditional children's book on its head, this book follows Sam Vimes (commander of the city watch and devoted dad) reading his book to his son. He changes things around a bit, taking things from the grimy city rather than from an idyllic farm his son will never see, and tells him a story he will be able to relate to. If you have read some of Pratchett's latest works, you will note where this story has come from, and I love it. A very real, very lovely story.
"Are we not all, in some way, looking for our cow?"
This book is funny, and sweet. Sam Vimes, reading the book Where's My Cow to his little boy Young Sam, decides the book is all wrong. They live in Ankh Morpork after all, a city where Young Sam won't hear BAA BAA and OINK OINK but rather SIZZLE.
This is the perfect companion to the Discworld book Thud! Showing the hard as nails Commander of the city watch Sam Vime's reading to his son. This little book is heartwarming, fun to read to a two year old and has great drawings of many of the discworld characters.
Have a look out for the picture of terry hidden in one of the illustrations.
If you are a fan of the Discworld series, this book is ... well, not exactly indipensible ... but a very charming addition to your collection. Other books in the series have Vimes reading a book to his son ... and this is that book. Sort of. The story starts out conventional, but reveals itself to be a true Discworld creation. The illustrations are just marvellous, many of the characters shown just as I imagined them!
No thank you, not for me. I think some of the other reviewers have been a bit quick to lavish praise upon this book it doesn't really deserve. For a start we have already heard the entire story contained in this book in the excellent Discworld novel "Thud" all this adds is simply pretty pictures. There really are better things to spend your money on (like the aforementioned "Thud").
