Beside the sea, there once lived a cow, a donkey, a sheep, a pig, and a tiny little mouse. One warm, sunny morning--for no particular reason--they decided to go for a row in the bay. As a child care worker I am always on the look out for a good book that I know children will love, and this story is a classic. Not only do the children love the plot, you can extend on this book with animal sounds, and science lessons on floating and sinking! It is excellent and a very good buy :)
This is a great classic childrens story. It captivates the children as it is in rhyme and the story is very funny. It is a tale of a group of animal friends who decide to go for a sail on the boat. For children it has humour, suspense and the opportunity for interraction.
When asked 'Who sank the boat?' my two year old always answers 'me'. He never tires of listening to this story. It is great because he can also join in with the story and he thinks that he is reading. I love the rhyming text and the very predictable ending. (Well, it's predictable when you have read it 50 times!!)
The truth is, I was a bit disappointed with the illustrations. I thought they were a bit grotesque, but my husband (who is a painter and tattoo artist) loves it. Our 2 year old daughter has still not shown any interest, but I am sure that she will in time as she just loves any books with animals in it! The story is great, and yes - there's definitely a few things to be learnt from it...
Who Sank The Boat is one of my son's favourite stories!
The repetition, funny and clever illustration and hilarious story-line make for a wonderful read. My son recieved it at around three years of age and would laugh every time it was read to him. It also encourages them to get involved in the story by asking "do you know who sank the boat?" which he would usually yell out the answer to.
I highly recommend it as something to buy for your own children, or as a gift.
As a father I read this book to my children when they were young, and they loved it. And now, as a professional mining engineer, and mine manager, dealing with $100 million dollar budgets, I find that this book holds a critically important lesson for everybody who works at the mine. Alas, there are very few people want to learn the lesson. (This book deserves six stars).
