Best FPS game for quick and addictive multiplayer action

If you're into first person shooter games and really don't care for single player, this is a fun and simple yet effective game. There is no real single player apart from the ability to add bots to your own server. The bots are reasonable, but do not compare with the online multiplayer.
If you've never heard of Counter-Strike, basically there are two teams, the Terrorists and the Counter-Terrorists. Depending on the map, the aim is either for the Terrorists to plant a bomb or for the Counter-Terrorists to rescue hostages. There are quite a few weapons to choose from, and they all have strengths and weaknesses, for example the Scout is very light and fast to move with, but is extremely weak unless you land a head-shot.
Thankfully, there are many online local servers that have a low ping that make finding a server a breeze most of the time, although occasionally there are rather annoying microphone spammers and cheaters (the "VAC" protection does a reasonable job most of the time though). One thing I really hate is having to use the content management system "Steam" to start the game, which is very slow at starting and updating.
The games graphics are pretty good, although since it isn't a particularly new release don't expect jaw-dropping realism.
I recommend trying this game first in a Internet Cafe (it's very common) before buying, as it's almost a love or hate scenario. Overall a decent enough game, if you're into this kinda thing.

If you loved playing Counter Strike left over from the original half life days, then this is what you've been waiting for. This is half life source: the same great gameplay of the old game with spanking new graphics and audio and many subtle touch-ups on many aspects of the gameplay mechanics. Must for half life junkies.
