A sorcerer named Yen Sid ? he of The Sorcerer's Apprentice fame ? creates a wonderful cartoon world where Disney's retired and forgotten characters and creations can live. The first inhabitant of this Cartoon Wasteland is Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney's very first cartoon star who was shoved out of the spotlight when Mickey Mouse was created. Over the years, Oswald makes the Cartoon Wasteland a safe, comfortable haven for his fellow 'retirees,' all the while becoming evermore jealous of Mickey's popularity.

Mickey stumbles across the map that leads to the magical Cartoon Wasteland and makes a mistake that devastates Oswald's world. The actions result in Mickey being pulled into the Wasteland, to see what he has done and to do something about it.
