Having won the last King of Fighters tournament, Alba Meira took the title of 'king' from Duke. Shortly afterwards, Duke and his Mephistopheles gang disappeared. With the help of the new 'king', Alba and his brother Soiree, peace had once again returned to Southtown.
But (you knew this was coming, didn't you?) the tranquillity doesn't last long. In the space of time it takes to make a sequel, King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2 (KOFMI2) plunges the pair into a series of bouts of bash-em-up action. The character roster has been ramped up to 24 characters now selectable from the start, but there are many new hidden characters waiting to be found, including some fan favourites making a surprise return.
The Fighting system has also been re-jigged from the prequel. The familiar control from the first game has been improved, and with the new additions of Super Cancel and Counterstrike, KOFMI2 will offer a new and truly rounded fighting experience.
Along with the completely redesigned graphics and enhanced game mechanics, KOFMI2 also offers many varied modes to keep the player coming back for more, by awarding many hidden items for those who can complete the challenges.

KOF is franchise in the same tradition as street fighter- a traditionally 2d beat'm up. i never got to play or hear of them till they were long old and from the youtube skits i saw i felt that they looked more ridgedly animated compared to sf- capcom vs snk on GC was the my first sampling and with the more updated animations the characters had great appeal. the maximum impact tile was a 10th anniversary and thats where it got is 3d treatment- a solid game but if you want a crash course in SNK character introduction then maximum impact 2 is a must- it has a huge character count, plus many unlock-able ones. the fighting is solid blow per blow. characterizations range from emo badass, traditional disciplined fighter, to cute, and gun happy! i have not played this for long but i know that this title makes me feel part of the KOF family now- despite its break from its 2d tradition. that said, it is still specifically designed to be a 2d fighter- the environments look great but your focus is on fighting your opponent, not pushing them down some stairs (the creaters have stated this). if you have a ps2 and like finding missed gems this is surly on of them.
