Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a point-and-click adventure game in which you play Professor Layton and his young assistant Luke as they travel around the mysterious village of St. Mystere. You guide them through a comic style adventure as they attempt to locate the "Golden Apple", solving a series of mysteries along the way.
St. Mystere is divided into several areas that you can move between, though you have to unlock certain areas before you can enter them. As you explore St Mystere, you can talk to non playable characters and investigate objects tapping the screen. Many of the characters will ask Layton and Luke to solve a puzzle or they may discover a hidden puzzle when they investigate an object or item. If you fail to successfully solve a puzzle, it will be stored for you to try again later.
There is a wide variety of puzzles types for you to try, from straightforward brain teasers, through logic puzzles to mathematical problems. Each puzzle you successfully solve will reward you in "picarats", which are the currency of the game (and not very small rodents as their name suggests!). There is no time limit to each puzzle, and if you get stuck, there are three hints available to help you. Each hint costs you a "hint coin". You start the game with ten hint coins, and you can find more as you explore St Mystere. If you get a puzzle wrong, you can re-try it as many times as you like, but the first two times, it's picarat value is decreased. If you get really stuck you can give up on a puzzle and come back to it later, though some puzzles must be solved if you wish to progress. Another reward for successfully solving puzzles is a Gizmo. Gizmos can be used to build a robot dog that can help you find hint coins.
If you solve all 120 puzzles in the main game and each of these additional puzzles, 15 bonus puzzles are unlocked. Even more puzzles are made available each week via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village has already been a smash success in Japan and China, and it's likely to be just as popular with European gamers.

This game is great for children and adults alike. Children will like the slightly ominous story-line with exciting and mysterious characters, and it provides them with a great introduction to a variety of logical and lateral thinking puzzles. For adults it will provide hours of entertainment as they try and remember puzzles their parents would have used to amuse them in their childhood. Try to find and solve all the puzzles, they're hiding everywhere!
An excellent game, maybe a little cutesy for some, but I the beautiful graphics and simple controls make it perfect for everyone!
Professor Layton and the Curious Village is a brilliant game, especially for people who enjoy brain teasers and puzzles. It focuses of the Professor and his apprentice Luke being called in to solve a mystery, but therein, they discover more mysteries which in turn must be solved to achieve their goal. With interesting characters and story, this game can take up hours of your time while you try to figure out the puzzles.
The Best Game ever!
My daughters Favorite........... now she wants all of them..........
She is only 10 but can figure most of the puzzles out by herself after hours and hours and hours and weeks of play, so keeps her entertained no end...longest lasting game she has played, It is very challenging, especially for her but this does not put her off.
My Husband and i love it too. we used some of the puzzles in a quiz night against friends.
very Fun and Addictive, and the best thing of all it is educational!
Yes Yes Yes get this game cant wait to see what the other Professor Layton games are like.
I am of "mature age" (like Wine) and use my Nintendo DS to keep the grey cells active. And this game does just that. The graphics are very good and the game is easy to follow. The puzzles do what I expect and keep me thinking with the added advantage of viewing a problem from different angles.
A really good collection of brain-teasers & puzzles wrapped in an intriguing mystery with a charming art-style. May not have much replay value but there are more than enough challenging puzzles and the unfolding story is a great incentive to progress through them all.
