A lone time traveler from the year 2035 must solve a riddle that may save his people... but it may also take him to the brink of madness. Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe and Brad Pitt star in this brilliant sci-fi masterpiece from Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director of The Fisher King. After the worlds population is devastated by a killer virus, survivors must live in dank underground communities. Cole (Willis) volunteers to travel into the past to obtain a pure virus sample, thereby helping scientists develop a cure. Along the way, he crosses paths with a beautiful psychiatrist (Stowe) and a one-card-short-of-a-full-deck mental patient (Pitt). But the race is on, as Cole searches for The Army of the 12 Monkeys, a radical group linked to the deadly disease.
With unforgettable performances and imaginative special effects, 12 Monkeys is a modern day classic laced with Gilliams trademark wit and dazzling visual style.

Good Science Fiction (weather a book, a movie, tv, whatever) has the power to make us look at ourselves as a society. The events in this movie metaphorically mimic events in our everyday lives. Even though we have not yet discovered time travel, all of the other events in this movie could happen, which is absolutely frightening. This is a dark movie, not for everyone, which has a deep high-minded script and plot (it may take a few watchings to fully understand this one.) The cinematography, directing, and acting are wonderful. Bruce Willis proves that he can do other movies besides his normal action type. He also proved it later in The 6th Sense, but I think this is one of his best performences. As for Brad Pitt, it is his best performance. It's so real that by the end, you'll think he's crazy.
12 monkeys is a mind-trip! One of the greatest movies ever made. This movie stays in your head for days and days after seeing it. Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt both give superb performances. 12 monkeys has made it's way into many favourite movie-movie lists and there is no question why - this movie is a masterpiece.
"Twelve monkeys"'s got all the elements to become Terry Gilliam's masterpiece. An outstanding screenplay, a sustained rhythm, clever sometimes ironic dialogs. Moreover, he had a good nose about the cast. "Twelve monkeys" is also the first movie where Bruce Willis stands back from the kind of character he used to play in his previous movies. Here, a jaded and hopeless character which you could nickname a prisoner took over from a fearless and invincible hero (as it was the case in "Die hard"). No matter how he tries, he's a prisoner of the time. The movie contains a very thrilling end too. It's got a real dramatic power. But this terrific movie is also a reflection about man, the dangers he dreads (notably, the ones that could cause the end of the world and here, these are virus that can create illnesses). No matter how long it will take, "twelve monkeys" will be estimated at its true value: one of the masterpieces made in the nineties.
I really liked this movie. I watched it the first time because I heard that Brad Pitt was in it. (I am a girl by the way. Not some creepy guy) But obviously no body told me that Brad Pitt wasn't so hot in his mental role. But a really awesome movie. Bruce Willis normally is in good movies anyway.
Another brilliant film by Terry Gilliam. 12 monkeys will keep you on your seat and guessing until the end. This film is one of my favourites, and no DVD collection should be without this film. At the end of 12 monkeys all you can do is think about the story you have been taken... this film will stay with you forever.
This movie is seriously twisted, but I mean in a good way. The whole concept of the film seems to be something churned out in a backyard production studio (in terms of its originality) despite the fact that it was a major hollywood film with wolrd renowned actor Bruce Willis playing the lead. Not his usual style/genre of movie but excellent all the same.
Really cool stuff. The whole concept of this movie is pretty ground breaking when you consider the stuff that Hollywood usually churns out. The fact that it has two big name male actors in the lead and a very under-rated Madeleine Stowe as Co-star make the movie work with smoothness. Loved every minute of it.
This movie is done brilliantly. It's another one of those movies where the world has succumbed to some sort of doomsday disaster, and the scientists of the time try to figure out how to destroy the virus that has killed most of the humans on the surface by sending back Bruce Willis' character as an expendable prisoner. Great acting, excellent plot, and one of the main characters doesn't believe a person can travel back in time to prevent a disaster then becomes a major believer. The ending shocks you also.
a pretty good sci fi thriller with some good performances from bruce willis and brad pitt who manages to play a crazy guy pretty darn well. directed by terry gilliam this movie has a great visual style that comes with something directed by him and the movie overall is twisted but easy to understand an follow, well worth a look at the very least.
Dark bleak futuristic time hopping science fiction from Terry Gilliam about a forlorn convict sent back into the 1990s to try and find out what happened and stop it. It being the unleashing of a virus that triggered the virtual destruction of society. Very stylised and extremely if rather morosely cool.
