The monoliths have been watching us. They gave us the "evolutionary kick in the pants" we needed to survive at the Dawn of Time. In 1999, we discovered a second monolith on the moon.. Now, in the year 2001, the S.S. Discovery and its crew, Captains Dave Bowman and Frank Poole, and their on board computer, HAL-9000, must discover what alien force is watching us.

This is a cinematic masterpiece. It's astounding how much this film is referenced in popular culture (The Simpsons in particular). It's a very dark movie and requires a lot of thought to watch and understand, so chances won't appeal to people who just want to be entertained.
On the technical side of things, for a movie that is nearly 40 years old it doesn't look it doesn't show it's age at all, nothing looks cheap or 'cheesy' and could pass for a film being released today.
If you love Kubrick and haven't seen this then you definitely should. Right now.
A science fiction classic but it unfortunately won't appeal to many casual movie fans today due to its extremely slow pacing -most people will probably give up about an hour in and still nothing has happened yet. The musical score is brilliant throughout and the special effects still hold up fairly well today. The extras unfortunately are sorely lacking in this DVD release
A sci-fi classic. Stanley Kubrick always had a clever way of capturing the human condition on film, but in this case he bought out the amorality of AI. It's stark and you'll notice how chillingly cold it seems but that's the atmosphere Kubrick wanted. This film has influenced countless others and if you're a sci-fi or general movie buff, you could make a game out of spotting the scenes other films have paid homage too. Not for the casual viewer, more for the discerning fan.
I spent many a sleepless night after watching 2001. Not only because of the psychological horror (of which 2001 is a masterpiece) but also because of the way it brought me (a restless soul) some clarity to the way I observe the universe. It changed my way of thinking in a very profound way. And after reading the novel (by Arthur C. Clarke) I found myself once again inspired (a writer as I am) by the level of imagination.
The Space Odyssey is not something one can just "go and see". One has to be ready for it, or it cannot be understood. In fact I don't think it can be understood at all, at least not all of it at once. It is a philosophical journey to the infinite and beyond, a masterpiece of it's genre and still after 32 years technically quite impressive all the way to the powerful musical soundtrack featuring 'Also spracht Zarathustra' by Richard Strauss and 'Blue Danube' by Johann Strauss.
Take all the time you want, but eventually you are going to have to see this film. If it can bring some order and understanding to the universe of a struggling artist like me, it can certainly do it for you as well.
To be honest and I’d probably get lynched if I said this at a sci-fi convention but I found this movie boring and uncreative even considering it’s time. So little happened and the conversation between man and computer was so boring and dry that I found myself falling asleep. Towards the end there are a few nuggets of inspiration but not enough to make me recommend this movie. Sorry.
The classic 1968 science fiction film from Stanly Kubrick is a highly influential film that forever changed the face of cinema... OK, it's not terribly interesting, and can be pretty slow going, but the story and effects are incredible. Richard Strauss' "Thus Sprach Zarathustra" was made famous, and HAL is scary... a great film...
a movie that has an incredible eye for detail and an incredible ability to hold silence for long extended periods of time. this movie almost has no plot or at least a very abstracted plot but the whole point of this movie is in its visual beauty and its incredible props. a wicked movie and an absolute classic which is well worth adding to your dvd collection.
Most definately my favourite Stanley Kubrick film, the atmosphere that he manages to create in this, one of the first Epic Space/Sci-Fi films, is truely amazing. This really is a Space Odyssey and its a shame not many films in the same genre have held up the same level of absolute brilliance. Highly Recommended
