Apocalypse Now Redux - The definitive version of Francis Ford Coppola's stunning retelling of Joseph Conrad's classic novella "Hearts of Darkness" set against the Vietnam War stars Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper and Harrison Ford. Nominated for 8 Academy Awards, the story tracks the journey of Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), a U.S. Army intelligence officer sent on a hazardous mission up river into Cambodia to terminate "with extreme prejudice" an American renegade colonel named Kurtz (Marlon Brando) who has spun out of control and out of his mind in a remote jungle compound. Featuring 49 minutes of never-before-seen footage Francis Ford Coppola states "Ultimately, my aim with Apocalypse Now Redux was to achieve a richer, fuller and more textured film experience that, as with the original, lets audiences feel what Vietnam was like: the immediacy, the insanity, the exhilaration, the horror, the sensuousness and the moral dilemma of America's most surreal and nightmarish war."

The title of this film, "Apocalypse Now," is not so much meant to signify the Vietnam War itself, as most reviewers conclude, but rather express Kurtz's intellectual and emotional reaction to the cruelty that lies within the heart of all humans. This is revealled in a brief scene where Kurtze has written - in red ink - across the pages he has typed, "Drop the bomb, destroy them all." For, while we engage in such acts of barbarism, we as humans do not deserve to live. The only purity Kurtz finds in human action is the undaunting will to kill.
Yes, this is a film about the Vietnam War, but it is also certainly much more, it is an essay on the human soul, and the darkness that dwells within us all. The slaughter of Kurtz, intercut with scenes of ritual slaughter of a bull by the tribesmen, implies that the only way a corrupt society (such as America, in this case) can cope with the message a man like Kurtz brings to it, is to destroy him. Thus society is reassured, normality prevails again and no-one need look into their own heart of darkness.
I watched this film as part of a study on the Vietnam war in order to get and idea of the horror, tragdy and senselesness of war. To be honesty after all the hype I heard about it was ready for an epic but I found it was too long and felt very disjointed. I found films such as full metal jacket and paltoon more informatitive.
I watched this film again nearly 20 years after I watched it the first time. When I first watched it, it shocked me and made a profound impression on me, reinforcing the horrers of war. I got it out again recently to introduce to my teenage son who is studying Vietnam but it wasn't what I remebered. It was too long and felt very disjointed. It didn't seem so shocking (which may be a sad reflection on how I have become de-sensitised over the years). I would not strongly recommend it-prefered Platoon
This is just a really sick weird stuffed up movie. If your into weird vietnam movies like platoon then youll be a fan of this, i wouldve liked watching this as a young kid but now its just weird.....cool movie though...but i wouldnt add it to my collection, i dont consider it to be a classic..its to weird.
Classic! One of my favourite movies of all time! 5 STARS – No DVD collection is complete without this title amongst it. Powerful performances, superb production value with strong clear direction… a masterpiece. A must see for all movie fans, some might not agree with me but this film with live on for many years after the actors have all but been forgotten!! - haps
One of the definitive films of the 1970s... Martin Sheen plays Captain Willard, a US soldier sent on a mission to kill a renegade US leader named Kurtz (played by Marlon Brando) who has set himself up as a local deity... this version is digitally remastered with 49 mins of extra footage... loosley based on Jospeh Conrad's deep river journey novel, "The Heart of Darkness"... not your standard war movie...
Apocalypse now is a very well done story, loosely based on a novel. Set in the Vietnam War in the jungle, the movie offers part historical/part literay/part fiction in the way the movie is presented. The acting is really well done and he visual effects are stunning. This really is well done
Even if you've seen the movie before, the DVD is a pristine example of restorative technology can do for movies that deserve preferential treatment. This example is one of the best I've seen, showing its viewers the wonders involved in the art of making a very dramatic example of what warring encompasses. It also has some interesting extras, including the comparisons to Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," letting someone that hasn't been inducted into the work taste some of the symbology buried within those pages. For these reasons and because of other, more addictive loves that encompass the "smells of napalm in the morning," the abnormality of the color spectrum when one chemically bends it in the middle of a battle, and because of the sheer scope of the cinematic equation, I'd have to issue directives for everyone to buy.
well this movie was the movie that almost destroyed francis ford coppolas career. the movie took over a year of shooting before it was finished and most of the crew went nuts whilst making it. the redux is very good and makes a fairly long movie even longer however the new scenes do add something more to the film and do in fact better it, although i could do without the french dinner scene.
Apocalypse Now is towering achievement, a powerful, remarkable film beautifully remastered for the redux release. Based on Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness it is set in Vietnam and remains one of the most biting explorations of the cruelty and stupidity of war. Filled with startling and vivid images, vaguely surreal deeply disturbing and totally mesmerizing.
