Synopsis
11 year old Eliza Naumann comes from an odd family they all divert their emotional frustrations into secret channels. When Eliza unexpectedly begins winning spelling bees what had been a stable dynamic within the family becomes disrupted long held secrets emerge and a latent spiritual yearning is awakened in her withdrawn father Saul and compulsive mother Miriam. this was a bit of a crazy film, it kind of left me wondering what it was all about, and i didnt really know what to think of it. it was about a girl who kept winning spelling bees, and the effect it had on here odd family, including the dad played by richard gere. an interesting film, i dont know if i would want to watch it again because it was a bit depressing.
It is hard to decide what I think about this film. I expected it to be a heartwarming story about a father supporting his daughter competing in spelling bees, but it was strange and melancholoy and the end came without the usual explanations and resolutions. At first I was disappointed, but it is the kind of film that makes more sense a few days later. I could have done without the "magical" or "spiritual" component, though.
