The Dude, Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is unemployed and laid-back... until... Victim of mistaken identity, two thugs break into his apartment in the errant belief that they are accosting Jeff Lebowski the Pasadena millionaire. In hope of getting a replacement for his soiled carpet Dude visits his wealthy namesake and, with buddy, ex 'Nam' veteran, Walter (John Goodman), he is swept into a Coenesque comedy/thriller of extortion, embezzlement, sex and dope. It takes guys as simple as the Dude and Walter to make a story this complicated... And they'd really rather be bowling.

The Big Lebowski is the best Coen film ever, it's the counter culture modern day answer to easy rider.
You get thrown into the world of of three friends an ex hippie, an ex nam vet, and your normal joe. All training for a bowling tournament. As the above explains they get tied up in a situation because of mistaken identity. What makes this movie gold is that it manages to poke fun of and analyse the world of many of the modern day social stereotypes. From fat cat rich men to femanist artists and everything in between.
Really funny and thousands of great quotes.
By the same guys that made No Country For Old Men, a much different film. This one a comedy about a guy who gets into trouble and finds himself in over his head dealing with things as a laid back stoner would. Many great moments and John Goodman's performance is excellent. Well worth owning.
