The Coen brothers' seventh film is a typically bizarre mix of mistaken identity, hippy philosophy and ten-pin bowling. Jeff 'the Dude' Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is a bowling buff, laid-back to the point of horizontal, who gets mixed up in a blackmail plot involving a millionaire namesake. Roped into delivering the ransom to secure the release of the millionaire's kidnapped wife, the Dude's karmic balance is really put in a spin when his gun-toting buddy Walter (John Goodman) decides to help out.
Synopsis
The Dude, Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) is unemployed and laid-back... until... Victim of mistaken identity, two thugs break into his apartment in the errant belief that they are accosting Jeff Lebowski the Pasadena millionaire. In hope of getting a replacement for his soiled carpet Dude visits his wealthy namesake and, with buddy, ex 'Nam' veteran, Walter (John Goodman), he is swept into a Coenesque comedy/thriller of extortion, embezzlement, sex and dope. It takes guys as simple as the Dude and Walter to make a story this complicated... And they'd really rather be bowling.

A cult classic! No other movie has so many great one liners (and swearing). There's just so much to enjoy. All the characters (and their strange habits) bring something to the film. The whole film hinges on 'the dude', who by all accounts is an unimportant nobody, but because of a name mix-up becomes the central character. Just to recall each character brings a tear of laughter to my eyes. The cranky Malibu policeman, the sniggling DJ at Maude's place, Walter teaching little Larry a lesson, the guy who peed on the Dude's rug, nobody's messes with 'the jesus' guy, Jackie Treehorn dirty movies man, the private detective, the dude's landlord, the eagles lovin' taxi driver...... the list goes on and it is all good!
One of the world's greatest films and my personal favourite, The Big Lebowski ticks all of the boxes. Well shot, exquisitely acted, brilliantly scripted, thoughtful and complete characters along with all the hilarity of John Goodman. This is a film that everyone should see once before they die.
Definitely a movie to be watched again and again, each time finding new peculiar moments to laugh about and make you wonder. In my opinion this is among the very best of the Coen Brother's collection of films. There is something about a bowling theme that just lends itself to outrageously good comedy. Probably not a good choice for young kids due to language, and after all the dude is not the most productive role model for the financially measured well-being standards of 21st century America. The dude is above and beyond all that. I recommend this film to anyone who likes quirkiness, twisted comedy, bowling, or any of the Coen brother's movies.
This is a comedy with a detective story sub-plot, all centered around a hippy and various other social dropouts whose primary focus in life is to "go bowling, Dude."
This was a hugely underrated film of the Cohen Brothers which has slowly increased its circle of devotees since its theatrical release. As another reviewer has said, the more you watch it, the more you appreciate it. As with most creative writing that has issued from the fertile mind of Joel Cohen, ideas from numerous seemingly unrelated plots converge at various points in the film, and admittedly sometimes congeal, but usually they ignight a spark.
I find this one of my favourite films, it has humour at the slapstick laugh-out-loud level as well as a more intellectual level, and the "Gutterballs" mini-vid is brilliant. If you understand German you will also appreciate the absurdity of the Nihilists' conversation at the burger joint. And, yes, I am old enough to have seen "Branded" on TV so the whole iron-lung trip is doubly surreal for oldies like me.
The dvd has both widescreen and full-frame options, which is nice, and a crisp sountdtack. It is worth staying awake for the credits too so that you can listen to two versions of Viva Las Vegas. Like The Dude, I never liked The Eagles, but I do love the Spanish version in this film.
Buy this dvd, there is something there for most folk, and a lot for a few.
This movie is quite well done and is quite a good concept when you think about it. A case of mistaken identity leading to a series of events that is just completely random and serious. The acting is quite well done and the storyline flows quite well. I would recomend watching this movie
yeah i gotta say that the more i watch this movie the more i like it and the more i find its subtle nuances very funny. this has some great lines in here and some very funny scenes with a rug and some great prono soundtracks and other surreal imagery. overall a very funny movie which is becoming more and more of a cult classic, so why not watch it.
The Big Lebowsky is something of a sureal modern film noir rip off master piece. It totally puts on its head the stereotype of the tough private detective and replaces it with a frequently stoned hippie type by the name of Dude. The plot and the acting are both a pleasure and the cinematography in itself is enough to justify getting this one. Five stars!
