Inspired by the actual experiences of a WWII German photojournalist, Wolfgang Petersen brings the life of a U-BOAT crewman authentically alive with every moment of claustrophobic and explosive terror. Autumn, 1941. Forty-three young German sailors aboard U-96 enter the war against Britain seeking adventure, respect and heroism. For them, this voyage is for glory. For their captain, a seasoned war veteran at the young age of 30, it is a mission against enemy destroyers in a blood-red sea that can devour a ship and its crew without leaving a trace. Wolfgang Petersen's unforgettable epic has undergone a major restoration and is now available as you have never seen, felt or heard it before. THE DIRECTOR'S CUT features digitally re-mastered sound and image, over an hour of never-before-seen footage and as presented in the DVD format, is more breathtaking than ever, proving to be one of the most powerful movies ever made.

Chronicling the adventures of a German U-Boat captain and crew from their initial deployment to ther tragic end, Das Boot kept me glued to the screen for its whole duration, despite not understanding a word of what was said on screen (thank god for subtitles).
The movie grips you with a sense of claustrophobia, perfectly capturing the incredibly tight and cramped confines of a submarine, you will feel your nerves tense up in your stomach when you hear the distinctive sonar 'pings' of a submarine hunter-killer searching the depths, and when the hulls of the submarine creaks and groans when it is taken way below its maximum dive depth (complete with nuts and bolts popping out of the hull due to the extreme pressure!), such is the expertise of the sound engineering and cinematography of this masterpiece.
This really is one of the best war films ever made... Wolfgang Petersen directed this film in 1981... a fantastic anti - war message, right up there with the classic "All Quiet on the Western Front"... unbelievably tense and suspenseful, and shows the Germans as human beings too, rather than faceless baddies... a phenomenal, moving film experience...
This movie was remade by americans and called U571 or something similar but give the american one a miss and watch this incredible movie. The performances are strong and well rounded. This movie manages to make the terror, claustrophobia and tension palpable, if you havent seen this movie then get it and treat yourself to a lazy day slash evening.
Das Boot is a classic film that got all the recognition it deserved. Definately the best film in the submarine genre, Wolfgang Peterson manages to make another great film. Jurgen Prochnows most famous performance is very good, and the rest of the German cast are all also very good. The terror aspect is intrigingly dealt with, focusing more on themen inside the sub itself rather than the war
