this movie really show cases this amazing acting ability of both john travolta and nicolas cage, and the best thing about it is that both actors get to play both the 'bad' guy and the 'good' guy! in an attempt to catch a bunch of criminals, john travolta makes the ultimate sacrifice: he swaps faces with nicolas cage!
I thought to myself when I first saw this movie. John Travolta? Bad Guy? No thanks. However him taking the role as the "father" and "husband" to his characters family, excellent. Nicholas Cage is already a little crazy, so he pulls off his character well. This movie gives the best pickup line ever: "If I were to buy you flowers, where would I ... no. If I were to let you suck my tongue, would you be grateful?" Classic.
John Woo knows, if anybody, how to make good, stylish action. And that's exactly what this film is; good, cool, stylish action. The plot is great; fairly psychological and quite interesting. It has a fast pace, I don't think more than 30 minutes passes at any point in the movie without a giant action scene. All in all, I'd guess there are about four or five major shootouts, and two chase scenes which are each several minutes long(without getting repetitive, fortunately). The acting is excellent; every single major part is well-played. John Travolta, Nicolas Cage, Joan Allen, Alessandro Nivola, Gina Gershon, Dominique Swain... all give great, entirely believable performances. The best are definitely Travolta and Cage, though; fantastic, truly stellar performances. The characters are all well-written and credible, right down to the most minor one. The action is cool and very stylish, in every single action-scene. The theme of the film is great; of course, the story is completely unlikely, with the face-switching and all, but once you get past that, once you suspend disbelief, you'll most likely enjoy the film thoroughly. The script is excellent, plenty of action, drama, and thriller parts. Also, you gotta love the sharp contrast 3/4's into the movie, with the kid listening to sugary pop-music, while people are shooting intensely at each other. Great film. I recommend it to any fan of John Woo, Nicholas Cage, John Travolta and action films.
Forget about whether a movie needs to be intelligent or profound to be enjoyable. This is just a great all-round action from one of the best in the business Jerry Bruckheimer. The idea sounds a bit ridiculous at first where two people can instantly swap faces and voices through surgery and pull it off with the same body structure but the movie describes this pretty well. Both characters have to play the villian and the hero at different times and do so pretty well. There may be a bit too much mind-numbing action here at times but the conflicts between Travolta and Cage's characters is pretty intense and very watchable.
This movie is really really random, i wouldnt say this is the best action of all time but i have to say that it has its moments and its by far one of john travoltas best performances and a superb performance (well another one)from nicholas cage, its definitly worth checking out though id watch before i buy
despite being called an action movie it is a pretty funny movie too especially when travolta and cage are switched and people get confused by them, cage is the bad guy, and travolta is the good guy and their silly humour but neverthless good action scenes save the movie.
What would happen if you were a law enforcement officer and you woke up one day, found yourself in prison with the face of your arch enemy? Compound this with the situation where your arch enemy has your face and is living your life. This is the quandary that John Travolta faces as FBI Agent Sean Archer in John Woo's latest thriller, Face/Off.
After six years of dedicated work, Archer finally manages to capture Castor Troy, one of the most dangerous (and charismatic) criminals the world has known, and also the murderer of Archer's young son. He then agrees to take on the face of Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), in an attempt to gain the confidence of Pollux Troy (Alessandro Nivola) and figure out the location of a bomb in L.A. planted by Castor and Pollux. But things go horribly wrong when Castor awakens from his coma, finds his face missing, and arranges to have Archer's face put on his faceless head.
This ends up with Archer (as Troy) being stuck in prison while the Troy brothers run free, without anyone in the world having a clue that the person imprisoned is really Sean Archer. However, Archer (as Troy) manages to escape and there begins a battle between the two protagonists for their identities and lives.
In some respects, this is a rather standard, but intelligent, action movie. What makes it work so well is the acting of Travolta and Cage, who, when they switch identities, do so convincingly. The initial shock and the adjustment period is carried out brilliantly: both characters see and appreciate what the other person's lifestyle is like. It's all the more amazing when you realise it is the same actor who just a few minutes ago played one character but now is showing surprise at being himself.
The action and comedy is quite good. The contrast between the violence and the serenity in the Church, or the gunfight set to the music of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, when Archer and Troy confront each other, is allegoric and poignant. There is a definite Quentin Tarantino feel here, especially when members of the Archer family and Troy all find themselves staring down the barrels of guns.
Amidst all the hype, that mix of ingenuity, poetry, symbolism, choreography, and cinematography is what makes this one of the better movies this summer. Definitely worth watching.
yep a pretty stupid and ludicrous plotline that lends itself to a whole bunch of ridiculous set ups, which hey seem to happen all the time in this movie. um yeah i dont know a movie thats worth a watch if you feel like a mind numbing action flick but otherwise its kind of dumb. good for a sunday night of watching something to fall asleep to.
I really enjoyed this movie with travolta and cage up against each other.I do invite friends over to come and watch ...I do recommend this movie to all my mates and not all of them have enjoyed it like I do...but hey everyone to their own I say.I like these types of movies and yep this is added to my dvd collection at the moment
I haven't really enjoyed John Woo's American action films, and this is a bit over the top. Cage and Travolta do well, each channeling two different characters, but I found myself longing for the film to be finished. The plot is ludicrous, as is the science, and the story drags in places. An OK film if you want some action and there's nothing else on...
