This was a television series, back in the late seventies/early eighties. It was the memory of it and wanting to see it again, that initially started me searching for a release in dvd format. Earlier inquiries, and through retail outlets, failed to show any results.
Well, was happy to see it here. From start to finish, it goes for a little under 5 hours, and I watched from start to finish in one sitting.
It was written by Marcus Clarke, and understand it was the first novel written in Australia, I haven't read the book.
There are some fine performances from the cast and a pleasure to see some of our popular actors from earlier days, as well as known faces from overseas. The story is about the trials and tribulations of (for want of another name) Rufus Dawes, played by Colin Friels. The story touches loosely on some real historical events, characters and the penal system in early Australia,though not based on fact.
I think it's worth a viewing, and represents good value.

Wow , im so excited that all the old movies we sat down as kids or teenagers, are coming back so we can enjoy them again, without having to miss an episode! and we can enjoy it again and share it, with others. This one is a classic, a must own for me ( Aussie, now converted Kiwi!!) It reminds us all of how lucky we are now, and how horrible it would have been to be convicted for such small stupid things. A real emotional roller-coaster, dont expect a dry eye! but do enjoy good old fashioned cinematography & actors. A must for any avid "australiana or historian" movie collector. Enjoy :)
