Disappointing attempt to create an intelligent swashbuckler about Scottish hero Rob Roy whose high ideals were in direct conflict with his low social status and bought him into conflict with his social superiors. Despite a strong cast and some nice scenery it never really takes off. And remains doggedly dour. Tim Roth though is wonderfully villanous.
Tim Roth is one of the greatest (and dandified) screen villains ever. Liam Neeson is suitably noble and physical in the lead role, but the film is a bit hard going in places. A pretty grotty movie in places, with the rape of Roy's wife (Jessica Lange) particularly repugnant. This came out - I think - just before Braveheart, and sffers by comparison to that great Scottish epic, although both are sketchy on the historical accuracy.
