He and a fellow escapee, Peter Aufschnaiter (David Thewlis), make their way to the Forbidden City in Tibet, where Peter finds a wife and Heinrich befriends the western culture-obsessed teenage Dalai Lama (Kamyang Jamtsho Wangchuck), the spiritual leader of his Buddhist nation. I saw this film for the first time last night after hearing a great many people recommend it to me. I don't know why I waited so long! This is a soul stirring movie that is perfect in its simplicity. I don't think it's the best performance Brad Pitt has ever offered, but he was quite good. David Thewlis (an amazing actor who never receives as much praise he deserves) gave a perfect performance. But the real beauty of the film is the Tibetan people and their lifestyle. The cinematography was breathtaking and perfectly matched the mood of the film. I loved this movie so much that I'm going to buy it immediately. I love uplifting epic types of movies and this is truly one of the better ones I've seen in a while. In fact, it's one the better movies I've seen in a while.
Heinrich Harrer is an Austrian mountaineer who is forced to be a hero for the Nazi propaganda. He leaves Austria in 1939 to climb a mountain in the Himalayas. Through a series of circumstances (including POW camp), he and fellow climber Peter Aufschnaiter become the only two foreigners in the Tibetan Holy City of Lhasa. There, Heinrich's life changes forever as he becomes a close confidant to the Dalai Lama.
The story was interesting, but there are several parts that don't make immediate sense. You have to just wait a moment and it gets explained soon after the confusing scene. It's a movie that makes you smile, chuckle, shake your head in disbelief. Wonderful to see the relationship between "Henry" and His Holiness.
"Seven Years in Tibet" is a story written by Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer based on his genuine experiences in Tibet between 1944 and 1951 during the Chinese invasion of Tibet.
The film was directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and stars Brad Pitt and David Thewlis.
The beautiful musical score was composed by John Williams and features world renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma.
This movie really makes one feel helpless. I was amazed at how such a young boy could handle so much pressure and responsibility. Forget the fact that Brad Pitt doesn't have an accent in real-life, and you'll find this movie enjoyable. A must see movie for any film-fan
This is a really fanatstic Brad Pitt film. It is not the usauall character or role that Bradd Pitt usually takes up bu that is hwat i think is good about it. Bradd does a really good job at protrayong his character although i think with out Brad Pitt as the main role i doubt this would be such a greta hit!
one of brad pitts more obscure movies but definitly worth the effort once you get your hands on it, this is a touching movie that looks in to the relationship that occur in society and between friends and allows you to drift along after the characters as they all struggle with their inner demons.
This is really a wonderful movie, based on a true story. Brad Pitt is wonderful as the main character; he is brash and arrogant at the beginning, but he plays the role with a vulnerability and heart that grows as the movie progresses. David Thewlis is wonderful as usual, playing the role expertly. The sets are beautiful, giving the viewer an authentic feel of Tibet, and the plot is heart-warming and bittersweet, with the friendship between the Dalai Lama and the main character growing into something very moving amidst the back-drop of the imminent Chinese invasion. A very good movie all up.
