In a small Oregon town, four young friends are about to set out on the adventure of a lifetime - sensitive Gordie (Wil Wheaton from STAR TREK:THE NEXT GENERATION), tough guy Chris (River Phoenix from SNEAKERS), flamboyant Teddy (Corey Feldman from THE LOST BOYS) and scaredy-cat Vern (SLIDERS' Jerry O'Connell in his film debut) head out of town in search of a missing teenager's body. As this two-day trek becomes an odyssey of self-discovery, the boys will smoke, tell tall tales, swear, band together when the going gets tough and discover strengths they never knew they had. Co-starring Kiefer Sutherland, Richard Dreyfuss, John Cusack and featuring a soundtrack of classic 50's music, STAND BY ME is an unforgettable story about friendship and coming of age.

A kid goes missing. Four friends hear a rumor of his demise and set out on a 20 mile journey on foot to find him. They slowly realize how dangerous of an idea it was, and quickly realize how important friends are to have along the way.
This is an unforgettable movie where four young friends who are quite different to each other set out on a two day adventure to find a missing body. Over the two days they bond and their friendships become stronger, they have to work together to overcome the obstacles along the way and look out for each other. It is a moving film and the cast is amazing and they act so well for their ages.
Stand By Me is yet another one of the stories made into a movie from the author who has had more stories made into movies than any other author in history, Stephen King. Clearly, the central character here is Gordie Lachance, from whose point of view the story is told and who obviously symbolizes King himself, given many of his characteristics as well as some of the content of the film. This movie is literally filled with actors who have achieved varying degrees of success over the years, such as Jerry O'Connell, who played Vern, River Phoenix, who could have been bigger than Leonardo DiCaprio if he hadn't died, Corey Feldman, who has grown into an unenviable but visible existence, Kiefer Sutherland, who has become an excellent and very well known actor, John Cusack can be seen in a small role as Gordie's late brother, and of course, Richard Dreyfuss, who played the narrator and Gordie as an adult, has remained famous but originally achieved fame more than a decade before Stand By Me was filmed or the original story was even written.
What Stand By Me does for me is brings me back to a time when friendship was more pure and innocent and meant more to me. This film means more to me for personal reasons but it is a wonderful film and it should be enjoyed by the world. The last line of the movie means alot to me and it totally true. Do we really ever have friends as good as the ones we had when we were 12? nah i dont
A film which i remember studing at school, a brilliantly compiled film about some boys from a quite town in search of something interesting. A rumour that sifted throughout the town of an eleged body of a teenager. A classic movie which i do watch often. It brings back memories of the lengths kids go to in order to have a little fun and finding a little peace of mind within a world thats difficult.
Classic! One of my favourite movies of all time! 5 STARS – No DVD collection is complete without this title amongst it. Powerful performances, superb production value with strong clear direction… a masterpiece. A must see for all movie fans, some might not agree with me but this film with live on for many years after the actors have all but been forgotten.... or just grown up :)
I do agree with one of the other reviewers who indicated that this story is based on a Stephen King story, and shouldn't be in the family section - however the bulk of the movie is really just about young teenagers on an adventure, there isn't really much in the way of horror or gruesome events. Not too bad a movie to watch for the family.
This should not be in the family section! Based on a stephen king story, this is a pretty good adaptation, and an ejoyable movie for adults (not for kids, altough it is about them). this is a classic movie featuring some well known actors - including River Phoenix, and is well worth it at this great bargain price.
his film is a brilliant, well-acted masterpiece! What touched me the most was the late River Phoenix's acting, but all of the young actors performances were incredible. They are why you should see this film. 'Stand By Me' is not a bubblegum Disney film, nor a dry Hollywood film; it is a movie that captures childhood in a poignant, non-candy coated manner that is dead on. I saw this movie only a couple months ago and was blown away by it's style and acting. It is rare that you see such fresh, relaxed and deep performances that the actors in this film offered. Although this is not a recent film, it is a genuine, inspiring film that is so refreshing-being so different than the films Hollywood often gives us. I give this film a 100+ and recommend it to everyone. You will benefit from it's message and it's wonderful acting.
isnt this movie like that movie dream catcher??!! didnt they like meet this kid and like they all begin to have powers?! hahaha well ive seen its quite good and pretty cheap!! its a stephen king book soo it has too be good.
Based on Stephen King's Short story "The Body", "Stand By Me" tells the tale of Gordie Lachance, a writer who looks back on his preteen days when he and three close friends went on their own adventure to find the body of a kid their age who had gone missing and presumed dead. The stakes are upped when the bad kids in town are closely tailing - and it becomes a race to see who'll be able to recover the body first.
