I really rather liked this movie. For those who are crying out 'it is not accurate', get a clue - it is a movie, and I don't think that I have seen one movie that proports to be based on a true story that hasn't gotten at least a bit of it wrong. One of the highlights of this film is the beautiful and sometimes haunting music, which stays for you long after you forget the finer points of the story.
I confess, I loved this cartoon. Predictable, yes, but highly original and entertaining, especially the soundtrack and Bartok the Bat. The characters are interesting and the story - while perhaps not historically accurate - is a charming tale of "what-if" that will delight those with an imagination. I've watched this hundreds of times and I'm still not tired of it. You cant go wrong here folks!
Anastasia was my favorite childhood movie. Naturally, I was delighted to learn more about the real Anastasia in my russian history class. After I had completed the class, I rewatched the disney Anastasia and saw that many things in the movie was based on real russian history- about St. Petersburgh, The palace, the romanovs, and even the the villian, Rasputin. True, it isn't all historically accurate, but definately a learning experience for the kids.
I first saw "Anastasia" in the theatre the last day of November, 1997, the year it came out. I was eight, the year she is in the prolouge. Ever since, I have been interested in the story of Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanov, her life, and her untimely death.
While I know the movie is not historically accurate, I don't care! The movie is fiction after all- based on a true story (of Anastasia's rumored escape and women who claimed to be her), loosely, mind you- but perhaps it is not as unlikely as it seems: when the remains of the Romanovs were discovered back in 1991, Alexei (her brother, the Czarvitch) and one of the Grand Duchesses were missing. And with age analysis of the bones, scientists believe that the missing daughter is in fact Anastasia, and not one of her sisters, Olga, Tatiana, or Maria. But who really knows what happened?
My opinion of the movie is that it is wonderful. It draws you into the world of the lost Russian Princess, to a time that is "far away, long ago", that doesn't exist anymore.
The music and animation are stunning, and the photo research of St. Petersburg is amazing! Take the Catherine Palace and the magnificent gate you see, as well as the city itself. The 3-D animation is amazing; you look like you could reach out and touch it! The music is truly magical; "Once Upon a December" (especially Deana Carter's version)
is haunting yet beautiful. I own the soundtrack- I listen to it frequently
to help me relax.
But what I love best about the movie is the romance that occurs between Anya(Anastasia) and Dimitri. It starts out as a con, a trick for money, and turns into a love story. I think it shows that people really do have good in them, and that true love really exists. It's also heartwarming to think that a young boy who saved the girl he liked (princess or not) later helps her restore her identity and find a true place (in this case, happily together with him).
"Anastasia" is really my favourite movie of all time, even though now I'm almost 15. I'd recommend it to anyone, and advise historical literialists to look beyond the fiction and let yourself be taken on a "Journey to the Past" with the romance, comedy, and magic of this story.
although this is not a disney movie, it is still a classic childrens tale and i found it incredible. i loved the characters, and the animation was superb - especially anastasias dressess!!!!! one of my favourite animated films, and i highly reccommend it to anyone! if you do not enjoy this movie, there must be somthing wrong with you!! excellent movie.
Some of the non-Disney animated films are very good, but this one fails miserably. The animation isn't particularly great, the characters are one-dimensional and not very loveable, the plot is predictable and simplistic, but worst of all is how it bears no resemblance to historic events, but still purpotes to be based on a 'true story.' An actual historic figure whose actual criminal involvement is uncertain, is transformed into a demonic satanistic supernatural evil. Quite scary for the kids who are watching and also unfair to the real people they represent. This film is not fun or enjoyable, try a different one.
Historically inaccurate however, an enthralling movie. A beautiful tale for a child, although difficult to watch as an adult as you know how much is missed and/or wrong. Kirsten Dunst does not sing the opening song with much conviction - leading to a shaky start but it does get better from there.
this is movie is one of my all time favourites and should really be a classic. i would reccommend it as a family film as it would appeal to younger and older audiences. i love the storyline of anatasia and the animation in is is simply marvelous. a great movie.
This is one of my favourite animated movies. There is some clever work done with the scenery that I loved most visible in the 'Paris' song when the backgrounds become like the artists of the time periods works. Little details like that make it special. The songs are fabulous and the plot is really strong. Its a really nice tale that the kids can enjoy (some scenes might scare though -Rasputin is a little creepy). This is one to own!
now *this* is the kind of movie thatg disney should focus their efforts on making in this day and age! what a beautiful make of a classic mystery: in this animated film, the long lost daughter of the russian royal family is discovered again by two men looking to make some cash, and she unexpectedly falls in love with one of them
