It is an ultra-futuristic, mind-bending experience that features nine animated short films, created in the anime style pioneered by Japanese animation artists, to be released as a collection on DVD and VHS by Warner Home Video (WHV) June 3, 2003. These feature-quality short animated films, each between six and seventeen minutes long, tell new stories set in the revolutionary world of The Matrix, the groundbreaking virtual reality action thrillers created by writers-directors Andy and Larry Wachowski, and the highly anticipated second and third chapters in their film trilogy, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Viewers of The Animatrix will learn new details of the genesis of The Matrix, and meet new characters whose adventures are inter-woven with the fabric of the feature films.
The Animatrix is also a bold experiment in shared world storytelling, in which the Wachowski Brothers pay tribute to one of the pop culture sources that fired their own cinematic imaginations, the uniquely Japanese genre of animated futurism known as anime. The film brings together some of the most respected and innovative veterans of Japan's flourishing and globally popular animation industry and turns them loose in the Wachowskis' teeming fictional universe.
Also recruited for the project were two U.S.-based directors, Peter Chung (Aeon Flux) and Andy Jones (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within), whose work has been strongly influenced by anime.
The Animatrix is the end result of more than three years of close collaboration between the Wachowski Brothers and a group of master animators working in studios in Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. All of the directors of The Animatrix episodes were personally selected by the brothers, who wrote four of the episodes and supervised the production closely, from first concepts to post-production.
Episodes Directed by Peter Chung, Andy Jones, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Takeshi Koike Mahiro Maeda, Koji Morimoto, Shinichiro Watanabe

Animatrix is composed of nine excellent episodes, each of them of running time of about ten (10) minutes, showing parts of the concept and universe of 'Matrix'. There are at least three films that are outstanding: the first one ("Final Flight of the Osiris"), which uses the same technique as 'Final Fantasy', and the second and third movies ('The Second Renaissance I & II"), where the war between humans and the machines is explained in details. I watched this series of short movies two days ago, but I intended to see them again and again, to catch more details, especially in the extras of the DVD. The fans of Sci-Fi in general (and 'Matrix') and animes will love this DVD.
Welcome to "Animatrix", a visionary fusion of CG-animation and Japanese anime from the world's most revered anime directors. Experience the prequel to "The Matrix" and learn about the last cities of mankind. Witness "The Final Flight Of The Osiris", which stes the stage for "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Enter The Matrix". This was a good anime, considering that this film is going up against "Ghost In The Shell", and "Akira." Brovo Wachowski's, brovo.
If you are a fan of the matrix series then you must get this. If you didn't understand the new charactoers and their role in matrix 2 and 3, then you really need to get this and watch it. If you haven't seen the matrix then this will make no sense rather then being an interesting collection of short stories. Personally I really enjoyed this film.
If you loved the Matrix, and parts of the Matrix 2 and 3 didn't make sense to you, then watch this, as it will fill you in on some of the missing side stories the Matrix 2 and 3 occassionally refer to.
The Animatrix is a series of manga animation based around the Matrix series, and although interesting, not as engaging as the Movies. All in all a good watch, but not much of a connect with the storylines. Some of which are just a little too weird for me.
Interesting short story's about the other side of "living" in the matrix.
It's other films (kids with can) was an insight into the glitches of the matrix that every day people encounter.Unfortunately they weren't enough to keep me 100% in focus of watching the all stories.Art work displayed is ofcourse excellent but the plots failed to keep me there.2 of 5.
If you are a fan of the popular Matrix trilogy, this series of nine animated short movies should interest you too. They are made in conjunction with the Wachowski brothers, who created the Matrix movies, and provides a back ground to how the human race and the machines came to be at war with each other.
I didn't really enjoyed this film but I liked the first program (Final Flight of the Osiris) because it was so interesting. But the next 8 features got worse and worse, with horrible animation and terrible plots. This film is not good for little children to watch it. 2 out of 5 stars.
I loved the Matrix (the first one) and when I heard this was coming out I ran to the store to get it. It was...interesting. The Final Flight of the Osiris was amazing - but the others managed to just get a 'meh' out of me. Worth watching - and quite interesting - but in the end I felt they were a bit average.
The animation is excellent, the stories are interesting but I’d advise watching it in a few sessions as the overall feel just kind of gets me down and then ultimately bores me. That being said the first few episodes really had me hooked with their intricacies and nuances. There is some connection the characters in the movies but most of it is tangential to the main matrix plots.
This is a very good set of short films set in the world of the Matrix, but good grief its depressing in the extreme, not to mention disturbing in places. I can highly recommmend it if you can stomach the intensity of it but the first two and the last film are quite a downer, despite being very good.
