This story begins in Madrid in 1980, where film director Enrique (Fele Martinez) is flipping through newspapers looking for a gimmick for his latest screenplay. In walks Ignacio (Gael Garcia Bernal), who has been in love with Enrique since they were students at a Catholic school in the 1960s. While reminiscing together, Ignacio reconnects the director with his past and suggests that he turn their experiences of abuse at the school into a film.
But realities and identities frequently shift, and it becomes increasingly difficult to tell truth from fiction. At the story's heart is a tale of two friends, their complicated love for one another and their journey marred by abuse.
A complex, erotic and stylised take on the film noir, Bad Education premiered to much acclaim on opening night of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education is a film of deception. Hence, the title. Centered around a story of child-abuse in a Catholic boy's school, it does not provide any comfortable answers. Everyone is victimised in some way in this twisted tale. And, as always, Almodovar has created a film that disturbs and unsettles, as much as it is possessed of a dark humour and seething sensuality.
