Anna Sewell's novel Black Beauty has been one of the world's most beloved animal stories since its 1877 publication. The story is told by its hero, a remarkable black horse with a white "star" on his forehead, whose joyous and heartbreaking life takes him from idyllic country life to London's cobblestoned streets.
Written and directed by Caroline Thompson (1993's The Secret Garden), this is the most faithful of the book's several filmings. You'll cherish rebellious filly Ginger, mischievous pony Merrylegs and gallant Beauty, whose generous heart guides him under caretakers both kindly and harsh, from Farmer Grey (Sean Bean) and young groom Joe Green (Andrew Knott) to sweet-natured cabbie Jerry Barket (David Thewlis).

A beautiful story that realy opens your eyes to the awarenes of animal welbeing. A must see for any horse lover. they have done a fab job at capturing the emotions of theese animals. A great movie that the whole family will enjoy but make sure you have the tissue box close.
a five out of five star rating for me
Animals can't create thier own lives ond futures, it really is all up to chance for them. This is the best movie representing that that I've ever seen. I absolutely don't reccomend this for kids, they see it and automatically veto it because of the cruelty and death, but childern don't understand that that is often times a reality in the life of any animal, not just back in the time this movie is set in, but today as well. From the pages of the book right onto the movie-screen Black Beauty is a timeless masterpiece that any animal lover should read and watch, and even if you don't like animals, this one might soften you up a little.
This movie is a must for horse lovers and even those not into horses will enjoy it. Some of the scenes are very sad, which is great becuase often modern kids films are so sugar sweet that there is no emotional journey, this film sure has got that in spades. A great movie for the whole family, make sure you have tissues (or maybe I'm just a big sook).
Wonderful big screen adaptation of Anna Sewell's 1871 - 1877 classic animal tale... all of the favourite characters are here - Black Beauty himself, Ginger & Merrylegs, Squire Gordon, John Manly... the story is beautifully imagined and told... a wonderful cast too, with Alan Cummings as the voic of BB, Sean Bean as Farmer Grey, & David Thewlis as Jerry Barker... this film is very true to the original novel, and is funny and heart rending... a great film for the family...
Black Beauty the film has done an excellent job at being as captivating as the book. The acting is superb and i love the amazing job done at making the viewers have a look at the past. It is a very well-done film, and not for the weak at heart. It gives wonderful insight to the rough life of a horse, and his travels. The end is truly heartfelt.
