In Australian parlance, a "brumby" is a wild horse appearing in legends. This family drama is based on a novel by Elyne Mitchell that records many of her personal experiences living in the high, mountainous regions of the state of Victoria. In the story, a wild silver stallion colt quickly grows to adulthood and replaces his father as the leader of a herd of horses. The beautiful and intelligent horse is desired by a ruthless mountain man, who is unable to capture it on his own. In fact, when he buys a mare captured from the stallion's herd, the horse rescues her from him. In revenge, he determines to kill or capture the stallion no matter what. Unable to capture such a primordially wild creature, he winds up killing it, and now the ghost of the silver brumby roams the mountains.
Synopsis
In the unforgiving wilderness of the Australian Alps roams a stallion like no other. Grand in stature, a beauty to behold, he is the "King of all the Cascade Brumbies". Wise in the ways of the bush, courageous and daring in the face of danger, the Silver Brumby is revered by all - including his greatest enemy - Man. For years men have tried to claim the elusive brumby as their prize - with no success. Now one horseman (Russell Crowe), determined to challenge the might of the wild stallion, sets off an unforgettable adventure to capture the horse that according to legend, could never be tamed. Also starring Caroline Goodall and introducing Ami Daemion (now known as popular singer Amiel).

Classic! One of my favourite movies of all time! 5 STARS – No DVD collection is complete without this title amongst it. Powerful performances, superb production value with strong clear direction… a masterpiece. A must see for all movie fans, some might not agree with me but this film with live on for many years after the actors have all but been forgotten!!!!!!
I usually have pretty low expectations for "children's movies" not to mention animal adventures. This film turned out to be a fabulous surprise in every way. Sure, I came to it solely to finish out my search for Russell Crowe films; but I came away extremely moved by both the story, the breathtaking visuals of Australia and the lack of heavyhandedness so usually present in these films. This film provided a mesmerizing, compelling film experience. Oh yeah...Russell looks absolutely gorgeous..... Try it...you'll be glad you did.
