A 15 year old boy (Patrick Fugit) gets an opportunity to travel with a rock band, Stillwater on a 1973 tour. As a younger boy, his sister (Zooey Deschanel) and his widowed mother (Frances McDormand) had fought about the mother's control over the family and her denial of rock music. The sister leaves home and leaves the young boy her record collection, which immediately seizes his attention. As a teen, he makes record reviews for an underground newspaper. He submits those to Creem magazine writer Lester Bangs (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and gets his attention. almost famous is the ultimate rock film. when a young boy interested in journalism decides to write an article on 'still water' a new band, he gets 'kid napped' by them and taken on the ride of his life. this movie is partly auto biographical from the director cameron crowe. a movie that will make you sing and dance
Almost Famous' is one of those films I had been dying to see and just never got around to. Then the other night it was on Bravo and I figured I had time, I might as well watch it. Let me say that I'm glad I can finally say I've seen it, and what a wonderful experience it was. Despite my feelings about the lack of talent young Patrick Fugit has, he's quickly offset by the other talent on the screen. Kate Hudson delivers the best performance here with her Penny Lane, groupie extraordinaire who follows her favorite band `Stillwater', the same band that William (Fugit) is traveling with in order to write an article for a rock magazine. Penny is such a free spirit, and she's so devoted to the music she loves that you're instantly drawn to her. Billy Crudup also does well as the bands lead singer and Penny's crush, and Jason Lee is hilarious as the lead guitarist. As I'm sure all have read that this is a fictional tale based on Cameron Crowe's younger years as a reporter for Creem and Rolling Stone and so as the director Crowe makes sure that the film has those personal touches that lift it from sheer entertainment and create a realistic and homey feel throughout the film. I loved it, and I'm sure that everyone else will too. The film is just so happy and free you can't help but enjoy every minute of it
An absolutely glorious rock film, though I love that it also shows the downfalls of partying (aka Penny Lane overdosing) hard and the fast life. My favorite scene is when the band's on the bus and everyone starts singing 'Tiny Dancer'. Amazing movie, a must watch for anyone, really.
"Rockstars have kidnapped my son"
Isn't that something for a mother the fear. This movie is AMAZING yet so simple. Basically, William is just dieing to become a writer for music. He gets the break of his life when Rolling Stones Magazine asks William to follow Stillwater on tour and write an article about them. Stillwater is a pretty dysfunctional band, like all great bands are, and Rolling Stones don't know William is just a minor. Throw into the mix a few promiscuous groupies and you have yourself one fantastic movie about rock n' roll in the 70s.
This movie is fantastic. When I am tired of all sorts of crap going on I like to watch it late at night. Not only is it "a tribute to music" but it's a really compelling story "it's about a mother, a band, a man, a girl, all realising they have touched a boy". The music and bands are great, and it's really funny too. You will be thinking about this movie for a long time, it's moving and powerful. Definitely should buy it!
Written and directed by Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire)... it won him an oscar for his screenplay... follows the story of a young writer who follows the fictional band "Stillwater" around... semi-autobiographical, as Crowe once wrote for "Rolling Stone"...Philip Seymour Hoffman as Creem's editor Lester Bangs is classic, absolutely superb... Frances McDormand is great too, as is Billy Crudup... Well worth a look, for those who long for the halcyon days of 70s rock...
I wasn't alive in this time period (sad, I know) but still love this film and it creates some unconscious nostalgia. It captures not the facts of a time period, but the feeling.
The Bootleg version is better and has some additonal scenes which I believe illustrate the theme of the movie perfectly (such as the scene of Penny dancing alone in the auditorium after everyone has left).
The soundtrack is of course great, and at times you want to sing along. Kate Hudson's performance is touching and complex, and Frances McDormand shines too as the mother.
This is my favorite movie of all time, and I make everyone I know watch it.
This is one of my all time favourite films. I loved it. As said above it is partly autobiographical (Cameron Crowe really cut his teeth as a youngun with rock legends Led Zep - apparently the losing-the-virinity scen is real!! haha). So definately recommend it to anyone. Soundtrack is killer - read my review on that too. This movie opened up a whole new world to me and changed my musical tastes forever. Great acting, great story, great film.
I love this movie. Any movie that involves rockstar is alright in my book, and this one is exceptionally good. Follows young wannabe journalist Willian Miller as he goes on the road with an up and coming rock band. Willian has dreams of getting his article published in Rolling Stones Magazine. Gotta love Kate Hudson as Penny Lane
thiswas okay i watched it the whole way through, i actually found it quite sad, alot of rejection in this movie to be quite honest, its also a glimps at that sort of life, personally a life i wouldnt want to live a good movie, really good story line its a movie that makes you think!
