A musical starring the talents of Audrey hepburn as Eliza Doolittle and Rex Harrison as the Professor Henry higgins. This film is based on the musical- Pygmalion written by George Bernard Shaw. Audrey plays Eliza; a impoverished flower girl who would like nothign more than to be geenteel and be able to take up a job as a flower seller in one of those stores. Professor Higgins is a speech? analyst and finds Eliza a delightful challenge. Together with Colonel Pickerings financial aid, the two set off on a journey to make Eliza into a lady.
This movie is hilarious. I have never laughed so much ever. It has great acting, affects, dialogue, and especially superb humour – everything you need in a great movie. The movie does have a few scenes that drag out but all in all it’s a must have for all comedy fans and is suitable for basically all ages. It’s a must have, so buy it – You will definitely won’t be disapoint
I have read in a great many places (including the IMDb) that Henry Higgins is a misogynist. It has also been said that the film is a misogynist's fairy tale. Anyone saying this has clearly not watched this film too closely.
First, Higgins is not a misogynist. A misogynist hates women. What Higgins is, in reality, is a misanthrope. A misanthrope basically dislikes and distrusts everyone! Watch the film and you'll notice that Higgins treats everyone with the same disregard-Col. Pickering, Eliza's father, his own mother-everyone receives his rather cynical disdain. Some of the minor characters come off being treated worse than the principals do. It's simply more noticeable with Eliza because it's more frequent, it's newer with Eliza because the other principal characters have known Higgins longer and thus take it in stride. The myth that Higgins is a misogynist is perpetuated by the song, "Why Can't A Woman Be More Like a Man?".
Second, it can hardly be called a misogynist's fairy tale. If that were the case, I doubt Alfred Doolittle would have cause to sing, "Get Me To the Church On Time", as he'd hardly be getting married. His life is just as "ruined" as Eliza's by his encounters with Higgins, just as altered as her life has been.
This is a great musical, a good movie and it was even better as the original play by Shaw. Well worth seeing. Recommended.
great movie. kept me laughing the whole entire time. my family and i loved it. if you are in the mood for a bit of lighthearted comedy then this is the movie for you! either rent it from your local video store, buiy it from a movie shop--OR even better, purchase it of fishpond with your points! its such a good buy, you should all go out and watch it! go my fair lady!
This is an awesome story, in theory, however it goes on too long and an improbable romance is formed. I enjoy the concept in general, the fact that Hepburn doesn't sing (it is dubbed) detracts, but the main issue is that the accent really really grates on me! Worth a watch but nothing brilliant by today's standards!
The opening scenes of the rain-drenched cobblestone roads and theatrical backdrop lend a stage feel to a film adaptation of the Lerner & Loewe musical. Since it was based on George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play "Pygmalion", you won't mind the occasional "stage" echoes. In fact, that adds to the appeal.
We find Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) selling flowers and spewing out the most dreadful words in a Cockney accent. It is really almost unbearable, but don't turn the movie off as it doesn't last too long. Audrey Hepburn is perhaps the most beautiful actress to ever grace the screen in my humble opinion. Here, she shines and is only a wall flower for the first part of the movie. Later she blossoms into an exquisite woman who could win the heart of any man. It is truly her best acting.
Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) and Colonel Pickering discover her selling flowers and after Professor Higgins throws money into her flower basket we expect the two will never meet again. Eliza has other ideas and proudly marches up to the professor's home and demands to be taught to speak like a lady.
Colonel Pickering then makes a bet with Professor Higgins and says that if he can turn this uncultured "gutter snipe" with a "simply ghastly" accent into a sophisticated, elegant duchess, he will pay for all the expenses. (Reminiscent of "Trading Places" to give a modern example) It is just irresistible to the professor and so he takes on a challenge for six months.
Higgins arrogant attitude will make you laugh. He is humerously as unaware of other's feelings as he is of his own. He is at first very unlikeable, yet made me laugh through the whole movie. You will enjoy his eccentric view of life and cunning attitude as he tempts Eliza with chocolates.
When you hear "I Could Have Danced All Night," you will know why this will become one of your favorite musicals. "On the Street Where You Live" always makes me cry. The script is superb and humorous in so many places. you will find yourself crying, laughing, and becoming increasingly enchanted as the movie progresses. I love this line:
"The great secret in life is not a question of good manners or bad manners, or any particular sort of manners, but having the same manner for all human souls." -Professor Higgins
The is a beautiful film especially if you are a fan of musicals. Audrey Hepburn is simply stunning and Rex Harrison definitely grows on you as the film/musical progresses. Watched it tonight for the first time and thought it was great. Would watch it again. If you don't like musicals then avoid this one.
