When five high school students from different social groups are forced to spend a Saturday together in detention, they find themselves interacting with and understanding each other for the first time. A jock (Emilio Estevez), a criminal (Judd Nelson), a princess (Molly Ringwald), a basket case (Ally Sheedy), and a brain (Anthony Michael Hall) talk about everything from parental tension to sex to peer pressure to hurtful stereotypes while serving time. Ultimately, the five find that they may have more in common than they ever imagined and learn more about themselves as well as each other. The only question is, Will they remember what they’ve learned after they leave detention? Director and writer John Hughes, along with the stellar Brat Pack, cast makes this a memorable, moving film filled with believable dialogue, intelligent humor, and a sufficient dose of high school hijinx.
This is a great 80's movie. I am a child of the 90s but i still appreciate this movie and found it moving. It is a timeless movie which can apply to anyone's life. It's about 5 high school students who have nothing in common except they are in detention together for a whole satuday. They get on each other's nerves but as the day goes on they form strong friendships. It is enjoyable to watch and is funny at times and it makes you think.
A genuine 80s classic! How can you go past a movie where the character smoke a doobie, and then break into a dancing montage?! I think this film is perfect for a laugh over a few wines with friends - brilliant in so many ways! I have to also point out 'Not Another Teen Movies' great parody of this movie - wonderful!
This movie was panned by a bunch of critics. That is, ADULT critics.
Conversely, they were perhaps inadvertently panning themselves, because in a supreme bit of irony, they failed to understand why teens at the time responded so deeply to this movie. The very themes that the 5 kids dealt with in the movie and the lack of empathy on the critics' part underscored the gap between them and the Gen X'ers. For those of us who grew up at that time, the feelings of displacement and dysfunctional parental pressures were very, very real. All of the then-young actors do a splendid job of putting us in their situations. And not only do we feel for them, we remember. This is one of the few, rare movies of the 1980s that makes teens into real people with real dilemmas.
this is a really great movie, and i really enjoyed watchin it. the characters were funny as donkeys playn tick-tack-toe, and the quotes were just the funniest darndest things i ever heard!! anyone who enjoys comedys with really great storylines will love this, and it would make a mint as gift for everyone!! donn miss out!!

Ah the Breakfast Club. Although I am a child of the 80's, I came along at the tail end of Generation X. The cast of The Breakfast Club were actors that I looked up to as a child, and still enjoy as an adult. I remember my own mother was a big fan of this movie, even though she was an adult with children.
Of all the "Brat Pack" movies, this remains my favorite. Even over two decades later, the movie still holds generations of people captive and sends us all into deep thoughts of our own glory days when we thought that life was BS, and that we had it tough. We were just a few years shy of seeing how tough life would be once we escape the protective circus tent known as high school.
Over and over you hear people wishing that a sequel to this film had been made. I am very glad there was not one. Surely we can't imagine this would have been a happily ever after for these characters. They came together one day, but like most high school relationships, all good things must come to an end. The closest thing to a sequel for this movie would be "St. Elmo's Fire" and again.....all good things must come to an end.
One thing that I loved most about this movie was the tell tale showing of intelligence in the least thought of places; the school janitor. The movie portrayed the janitor as being a hell of a lot smarter than the assistant principal. I have found in my life's experience this is quite believable. It's also sad. I believe that those employed by the education system could learn a very important lesson about young adults and the way their minds work. Youth knows when it's elders have forgotten how to see things. Youth knows how to use that against them. The moral is simple; stay young!
