Based on true events, OPEN WATER follows an American couple, Daniel and Susan, (Daniel Travis and Blanchard Ryan) on an island holiday. Upon arrival at their hotel, we learn that Daniel and Susan's relationship is under strain from their workaholic lifestyles, and they need a vacation even more than they realized. The next morning, the loving and rested couple, certified scuba divers, board a local dive boat for an underwater tour of the reef. The boat is crowded with other vacationers, and due to a series of innocent miscommunications and a distracted crew, the couple is, after only 40 minutes or so underwater, accidentally left behind. What follows is the story of their ordeal: cold, alone and miles from land, the couple is adrift in shark-infested waters. While shining a light on how we often take our comfortable lives and our relationships for granted, OPEN WATER reminds us of the fragility and vulnerability of modern man in relation to the vast and indiscriminant power of nature.

If there's one thing in life that you shouldn't do, it's see this movie.
Waste of time. Not scary. No climax. Nothing. Just blair-witch style handycam crap in a different setting. Kind-of-maybe-sort-of-if-you-squint loosely based on a true story.
A young thirty-something couple goes on holiday to the Caribbean. One of the fun activities available to them is scuba diving off a reef several miles out. Due to a faulty head count taken by the dive boat crew, the couple is left behind in the open ocean. They find themselves drifting endlessly for hours on end, facing dehydration, saltwater sickness, jellyfish stings, and sharks! Although a boat and a large ship pass by within the couple's view, neither sees them, and they are not discovered missing until the following morning when a member of the dive boat crew discovers their gear on the boat, and their hotel manager discovers they never returned to their room. Frantically a search is mounted by plane, boat, and helicopter, looking for the missing couple
This movie was a disappointment - it was hyped up by the media and promotional team to be on a scale with jaws like would make me not want to go near the water again. This movie had a terrible storyline, some pretty shocking acting and some really bad scenes that you would not want to watch again so glad I waited until dvd would have been peeved if i paid good money to see this
I'm so glad I wasn't the one who paid when we rented this movie, because I was seriously disappointed and annoyed. We ended up fast-forwarding through the majority of it - A great big waste of time. I feel worse for the people who actually spent money *making* this movie because from what I've seen and heard, it was a complete flop.
And it's no wonder it flopped - The action doesn't exist, the acting isn't fantastic and it's filmed in that horrible 'handy-cam' style similar to the Blair Witch Project.
On the upside...............
There is no upside. This movie is so bland and boring.
this movie should have been so much better than it actually was! it had the potential to be really exciting, as it was based on a true story. unfortunately, there was too much pussyfooting about the issue, and not enough gore etc, so i was quite disappointed. there was like one scary scene in the whole thing, what a let down.
Not the worst movie ive seen but not really all that either, the one scene the bulk of the movie takes place in (being the sea) gets quite boring quite quickly, though the idea is freaky as and early on its quite good i just eventually got real bored, but in saying that it wasnt the worst thing ive seen, well worth a watch but youl only want to see it once
This is possibly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Apparently it is based on a real story, but I'm not sure how much of it is real and how much is fiction. Boring boring boring and more boring from beginning to end. The trailer made it seem like an interesting movie but that wasn't the case at all. All you get to see is two people floating in the ocean and possibly surrounded by sharks. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
i had high expectations for the movie open water, and it certainly did not meet them. this movie was extremely disappointing, and i would not watch it again. it was not nearly as exciting as it was made out to be by the trailer, which ruined all the best parts of the movie anyway. i wouldnt justify paying the price of a dvd to watch this. so if your curious, rent the dvd first.
this movie is sooo kool. it really makes you think about the dangers of the sea and going diving. it scared me soo make i nerly wet myself!. god the acting is just so good i couldnt belive it. and to think that this movie is based on a true stroy! freaky stuff. and i cryd soo mush at the end it just soo sad im soo goin to buy this movie and so should you! i love it soo much.
This movie isn't based on actual events just loosely based on in theory what may or may not have happened. It's supposed to be about 2 yanks who got left behind up Cairns way by a dive/snorkel/reef charter and that's where the similarities start and end.
How the hell can you make a movie based upon speculation?. Who knows what happened to them. Maybe it was a little more exciting then what we were given here.
Open Water is poorly filmed, features some of the worst acting ever and the story well it's pretty much non existent.
Far too much footage of them at sea really dragged the movie into unchartered waters of a new low that I hadn't really seen in a movie of late. It's all assumptions, you see a fin or two and assume with quick flashes that they are surrounded by sharks and then what? well you're also supposed to guess how it ends as the movie doesn't help with that decision. Hear me loud and clear when I tell you that you don't want to see this movie.
It doesn't even rate 1/5 stars but I NEED something outta something to write this.
