In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft North, a maximum security prisoner-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history - brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn - who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted.
One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, The Great Escape is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (The Magnificant Seven), screenwriters James Clavel (Shogun) and W.R. Burnett (Little Ceasar), and composer Elmer Bernstein. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is epic entertainment that "entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs" (Variety).

The first thing that strikes you about 'The first escape' is the number of big stars and great actors that are in one film such as Steve McQueen, Donald Pleasence, Richard Attenbrugh, Charles Bronson and so on. This is a wonderful adventure film that has a number of memorable features about it, not least the music and the motor cycle escape scene. The second thing that is so striking is that it is based on a true story. Whilst a number of events are fictional the film is a wonderful memorial to the incredibly brave men who were prisoners of war. Whilst this film was made in the early 1960s, it does not look dated and retains a wonderful fresh feel to it. Highly recommended.
