A powerful frontline cast - including George Clooney, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte and Woody Harrelson - explodes into action in this hauntingly realistic view of military and moral chaos in the Pacific during World War II. Nominated for seven 1998 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Terrence Malick), The Thin Red Line is an unparalleled cinematic masterpiece that Gene Siskel called "brilliant... a terrific achievement... the finest contemporary war film!"
Synopsis
The Thin Red Line is the long awaited third film from reclusive director Terrence Malick (Badlands, Days of Heaven). An all star cast marks this loose adaptation of James Jones's novel, set during the World War 2 battle for Guadalcanal between the United States and Japan. The ensemble of characters centres around Pvt. Witt (Jim Caviezel), an introspective rebel who, at the movie's opening, is AWOL and living an idyllic life among Melanesian natives. When he is found by his C Company superiors he is sent back into battle on the island of Guadalcanal, on which the Japanese hold a tactically critical airfield. This exceptionally beautiful and intelligent war film was shot primarily in Australia's Daintree Rainforest.

This is one of the most realistic and amazing war story you will ever see. It has a great cast of actors such as Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, James Caviezel, George Clooney, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson and Nick Nolte. You will love the hard action and bloodly reality. I loved this film and rate it 9 out of 10. Sad in the fact that many young men never came home and life was very cheap.
Classic! One of my favourite movies of all time! 5 STARS – No DVD collection is complete without this title amongst it. Powerful performances, superb production value with strong clear direction… a masterpiece. A must see for all movie fans, some might not agree with me but this film with live on for many years after the actors have all but been forgotten!! - simon
Based on James Jones' novel... tells the story of US troops in the fighting on Guadalcanal... boasts a phenomenal cast: Sean Penn, Adrien Brody, James Caviezel, George Clooney, John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Elias Koteas, Nick Nolte, John C. Reilly & John Savage... some amazingly realistic and intense battle sequences, but it's not just an actioner like Woo's awful "Windtalkers" (stay away from real life battles, John!)... quite enthralling...
Terrence Malick's interpretation of America's invasion of Guadalcanal against Japan in World War II finally showcases just how insane the great real estate war really was. Its hard to imagine that even in the midst of the post-modern era (the 1940's), wars were still being fought with 18th century tactics & mentality. ie; running up a hill without air support or ground cover is pure suicide. Its no wonder that millions of people lost their lives during this world wide conflict. The planet was being run by dictators and pompous generals hell bent on glory and the medals that looked good on their uniforms.
Lost in all the hoopla of a film that boasted such greats as Sean Penn (Hurlyburly), John Travolta (Pulp Fiction) and George Clooney (who by the way was about as memorable as his role was in the 90's television sitcom Roseanne) was Nick Nolte's (Affliction & U-Turn) performance as the blood thirsty Colonel that would stop at nothing, no matter what the human toll was to secure a hill and cement his personal legacy. Nolte's performance alone will garner many repeat plays on your DVD player and should rank The Thin Red Line right up there with Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket or Oliver Stone's Platoon.
well this for me was the better film out of the two war movies which came out at the same time. saving private ryan was good for about twnety minutes at the start but then became a propaganda tale. thin red line however concentrates mainly on the interior of man in war and not the violence, it is visually stunning and though quite long it is a masterpiece.
Terrence Malick makes films that are very artistic and very different in a strange way that is almost undefinable. This feature makes them superb to some viewers (such as myself) while alot of others seem to miss what is so special about them. I know alot of people who dont enjoy this film but to me it rates as high as Saving Private Ryan
