– Customer review on 01/03/2008 A few flashy gowns, a promising and utterly engaging beginning, a (tolerable) Knightley falls for McAvoy's dashing young man and Knightley's younger sister becomes jealous and makes up unforgivealbe accounts of things she has "witnessed". Then McAvoy is off to war as a means of getting out of prison, and to me, this is where the plot all goes downhill. A bit shocking is one of the first scenes where the "c" word is used (a shocking word in terms also of the era in which the film is set). The rest of the film is spent showing the horrors of war, and we viewers seem to forget the initial love story part of it. I still can't warm to Knightley, and she plays a cold, churlish character. I love films set in this era, but this one was disappointing and pushes shock value a bit too far.
